Thank you for waiting. Is this the first time your setting up an email on the BlackBerry 9800?

In the meantime follow these steps to safely reset and reboot your BlackBerry smartphone:

  1. Press and hold the alt key, the right aA key (shift/caps lock) and the del key at the same time.
  2. Hold this key combination until the LED on the screen turns red.
  3. The BlackBerry smartphone will reboot.
  4. Check if you have data connection.
  5. Set up the email account.

Please let me know if you're able to successfully setup an email after that. I'll be waiting for your response.

I'm sorry about that. What we did was just a simple reset to check if that would fix connection issues with your email. By the way, are you using Telstra's data coverage to access internet on your phone? If so please confirm if you are getting EDGE in all caps

Does a white screen display when you accessing the email setup application ,the setup icon?

Thank you for the information about the provider switch. This will be helpful in narrowing down the issue. I'll be waiting for your response.

Hi again I've also done some additional research for you. Please make sure you have a BlackBerry Internet Service from your new carrier too. If you haven't created an account yet, you can create an account through this link: https://telstra.blackberry.com/

It is stated there that new users need to create an account to begin sending and receiving email on their device BlackBerry device. Please turn on your device and ensure that it is connected to the wireless network during creation.

I hope the additional information would help. Keep in touch.

Thank you for the information. There is a big difference when you see 'edge' instead of 'EDGE' on your device.

Here's a partial breakdown of what you can generally do under some of the different coverage indicators:

EDGE: Can use the phone, send and receive email, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser with a high-speed data connection.

GPRS: Can use the phone, send and receive emails, PINs, SMS texts, and MMS messages, and use the browser.

edge/gprs/GSM: Can use the phone, send and receive SMS texts and MMS messages.

SOS: Only emergency calls

But before we determine that this is a network related issues and refer you to Telstra,

you can try the links provided below:

Reset a BlackBerry smartphone (Please do the Hard reset option):
http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB02141

Unable to access the Email Setup Application on a BlackBerry smartphone after a forced update:
http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB26055

If neither of these steps is the solution, talk to Telstra and have them check over your account setup on their end.

I hope this helps.
