Hi - I have a 1989 "F" registered 740 GLE auto Estate which has currently covered about 202 000 miles. It has been continually, but very lightly used since I've owned it (2006 - my dad owned it prior to that for 9 years) - 2000 or 2500 miles per year during which time it's been regularly serviced. Although it is sometimes not used for several weeks, and is parked outside, up till this year (2016) this has not presented any problems. However at the beginning of this year, it became difficult to start - so I had the battery changed in April When this did not resolve the issue (with the new battery having lost all its charge in the space of a few weeks), I then also had the alternator changed. This proved equally ineffective in preventing the battery from losing charge. I've checked obvious things like courtesy lights, but, apart from being advised by a Volvo electrics specialist that he feels it's also unlikely to be the radio, I've run out of ideas as to why it's just not holding any charge. Can you help? By the way, when jump leads deployed, it has no trouble turning and catching virtually immediately.

Hi to both Erica - and to Elixir, possibly the most exotically named mechanic on the planet! How fabulous! Anyway, because I'm British, and therefore a skinflint (tight with money), I opted for the slowest (and therefore cheapest!) reply time. So please forgive me that I did not take you up on your splendid offer of the live chat - at a cool $30, I felt I could live without hearing your words of wisdom directly, however dulcet your tones may be! Also, and credit to you, you then mentioned in your second posting, that you may not be the best person to answer this particular (clearly electrical in basis) question - although in hindsight maybe it WOULD have been worth the thirty bucks to talk to someone whose name I have only ever heard one other time  - in Donizetti's comic opera " L'Esire d'Amore ". I havent intended to embarrass anyone and sorry if I did, but suffice to say, I've had my $17 worth already!!

OK, so (trying to close somewhat more seriously...), I look forward to hearing the opinion of your electrics specialist in due course.

Many thanks again, to you both!

PS - the time there in Texas (do love a barbeque!!) is six hours behind us here in the UK (I hesitate to call it Great Britain after we opted to float off into the North Sea by ourselves very recently - wonder how THAT'll pan out....). So basically any time from midday your time to sort of late afternoon your time works for me - the fact I'm writing this in the absolute middle of the night (my time) should not be taken as "normal"!!

Hello Andrew... how are you doing? In this situation, I strongly suggest that you have it looked at by a reputable auto electrician to trace any ground that's causing the battery to drain. Though in my opinion it's more like a bad fuse / relay box. It's best if you can purchase a new wiring harness for this vehicle to get rid of grounding issues that causes the battery to drain. I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you
