I have a 2000 VW Golf automatic 1.6. There is a very audible "clunking" sound that comes from the underbody of the vehicle. It mostly occurs when making left hand turns at lower speeds (1-25mph) or when there is a change in elevation (a bump). My regular garage cannot find a fault & say it is because 'the car is old'.

This sound usually indicates a heavy bumping sound, softer than a clang, usually indicates you should look at suspension bushings, including shock or strut mounts. Or how about a loose strut gland nut?

Please check these parts on your car and let me know if they are bad.
