Rebuilt 360 by major local shop, never had any power, replaced everything, didnot use it much, years went by. Checked compression one day, best cyl 100psi,worst 75. Needed to pull heads anyway to have hard seats put in,install new heads and lifters, lifters went in dry;check compression before starting 120 each cyl. O_BOY problem solved. Start engine 1 minute, shut off, check comp, back like it was100-75. SO,no oil in lifters, good compression, oil in lifter, compression bad. There is more, need to chat live or call

I see... after you replaced the cylinder head the compression went good right? but after shutting it down there's a compression loss... Is that right?

Posted
Customer

No,comp was good when lifters were dry turning with starter, lifters were new

Ok, Did you replace the camshaft itself, main bearings and camshaft bearings?

Posted
Customer

yes, everything. Motor has good oil pressure and actually runs and starts great, its just that compression is not right. When I first checked it after new heads it had 120 per cyl. After I started it compression went down like with old heads. The difference is oil in the lifter

I assume that firing order and timing is correct, right?

Posted
Customer

Motor runs perfect it just has little power Lucky to get 65mph, old engine ran 75 or 80. have checked all linkage, everything. It is just that I had great compression when lifters were dry and bad when they pumped up when I started engine

Piston rings replaced Charles? You put in a new piston liner in the block?

What type of engine oil are you using anyway Charles

Posted
Customer

Yes, as I said everthing was new, motor has only 2000 miles since rebuild. When I replaced heads, I also replaced lifters, they were dry. Turned engine with starter 120 each  cylinder. It seems that valve springs are not overcoming oil pressure in lifters, but everyone says not likely springs could be that weak at idle. I have 15/30 oil

Have you tried using 20W 50W Charles?

Posted
Customer

When I loosen rocker arm shaft bolts and let rockers get real loose compression comes back. I would normally use heavier oil in a low miles engine

Posted
Customer

Would not use heavy oil in low miles engine

Ok, I believe you are using a torque wrench and the using the proper torque settings. Sometimes it's just it

Ok, Charles I have to ask my fellow mechanic for their insights about this issue. This is a tricky one considering the new heads. You okay with that? Just monitor your email for my new response so you can get back to me tomorrow

I don't know if I have worded things correctly enough to you. But every thing seems to point to the lifters when full of oil are stronger than the valve springs so the valves don't fully shut, but since two heads and lifters act the same way, seems valves are weak, but people say impossible at low rpm for valves to show weakness. Also compression shows even lower when checking one clyinder with other 7 running at idleI will look for your reply

Valve springs to show weakness

What brand of valve springs did you buy anyways Charles

Posted
Customer

They are original to my knowledge, that is the only thing that isn't new

Oh... I was thinking that the valve springs are new as well. Charles, looks like that this is pretty much our problem. It can be weak and can't perform well. I would suggest COMP CAMS valve springs, it is built tough unlike others. Everything is new but the springs, I believe you'll be good after the valve springs replacement.

Where do I find those
