You can change what is shown on your dashboard by tapping the field you wish to change.

With the default display, tap on the Arrival field and change it to Distance. You must be on a route to set the miles to detination.

If you wish to display more than the default two fields, use a Dashboard. Go to Settings -> Map & Vehicle and scroll down to Dashboards. Next, use the scroll arrows to find one you like and press Save. Then tap on a field and change it to Distance while you are on a route.

After this , please tell me if the screen looks like the one in the picture below.

If this does not show, you may have to update the map on your garmin gps by using your computer.
