kindle paperwhite

I purchased my Kindle Paperwhite last Christmas. My kindle can freeze, or responds very slowly, some books fail to open and I receive an application error message to try again or reload the book from Cloud, when I close the Kindle it no longer reverts to the shut down page - the text is still there. Please can you suggest remedial action?
