Please note I have checked all the details and they are 100% correct I have also deleted the account and set it up again checking everything twice over the exact message is "Cannot Get Mail the connection to the server failed"

It is important to note it works perfectly on my ipad 2 with the same revision of software and in the same enviroment.

Thank you for you question.

I have seen the "Cannot Get Mail - The conneciton to the server failed" error on my iPhone when syncing e-mail with an Exchange server.

After many troubleshooting steps I found the problem was the size of the inbox (9K messages). After archiving older messages into folders the iPhone could again sync.

Check the size of your inbox and try moving mail out of your inbox.

Thank you for your question. I'll do my best to help out.

Can you please try removing the account and add it back again? Can you still connect to the internet? Kindly Reset the network settings aswell. We can do so by following these steps:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Go to General
  3. Scroll down to Reset
  4. Then tap on Reset Network Settings

If you have any follow-up questions, please post your comments below this answer.

Thanks again.

I have done all you suggested above previously and none of these actions make any difference so for clarification I have reset the network settings, in fact I have reset the whole phone as well, I have also removed the account and set it up again from scratch, the error message is still the same.

Please advise another course of action.

I still have not had a working response from you, please note that unless I get a response that works then as per your web site you will not charge my credit card with the charge as you state in your advertsing.

I will happily pay if you give me a working solution?

This has not worked either I have tried it with an empty mailbox to make sure and the same message comes up. However I have tried sending an email from the phone and this works so it is communicating outbound but will not sync and accept inbound communications on email or the calendar so have you any thoughts given this set of circumstances as it the message is still the same message everytime I try and sync the phone.

I must get this working as I go abroad next week

I wait to hear from you

Can you kindly turn off SSL and re-check by sending an email to yourself?

We can turn off SSL by tapping the name of your existing email account under the Accounts section, and tap "Account Info" at the top of the screen. Tap Advanced and slide your finger over the ON switch on the Use SSL tab to turn it off.

Chris

We always work with SSL off already so that action you suggest is already in place.

I wait your other comments.

Since we tried Resetting the device to factory default and re-adding the email information back in but still no go then we can just copy the information using itunes.

We can copy the information from your iPhone 3 since you are telling me that you can send/receive emails just fine on your iphone 3. We just need to Backup your iPhone 3 and then perform a Restore from Backup to your iPhone 4S.

  1. Kindly backup your iPhone 3 by connecting it into your PC. Once iTunes detect the device, right click your name on the left side, there should be an option that says Backup.

  2. Once you are done with the backup, unplug your iPhone 3 then connect your iPhone 4S. Once iTunes detect the device, right click your name on the left side, there should be an option that says Restore from Backup.

Kindly re-check by sending an email to yourself?

If you have any follow-up questions, please post your comments below this answer.

any updates?

Carried out what you have said with backing up and restoring from itunes no change. Can send from the account but it will not receive emails or sync the calendars so no change from before exactly the same message "Cannot get Mail" the connection to the server failed.

As say I can still send from the account so there must be some sort of connection but definitely no incoming mails or calendar sync. This is very important to me as I am going abroad soon and need this working. I have seen other posts of a similar nature on the apple blog site.

Any other ideas?

David,

Backing up the iPhone 3G and restoring the information to the iPhone 4S should work as this will get the exact information from the iPhone 3G to the new device.

Can you send/ receive emails using your iPad? Can you try backing up the iPad and then restoring the information to the new iPhone?

Hi Chris

My Ipad works perfectly so how would I back up the ipad and then restore the ipad settings to the iphone without removing the differences in there settings on other items?

David

David,

We can transfer the information by connecting your ipad to your computer using the usb cable then run iTunes. Wait for iTunes to detect the iPad usually your name will show up on the left side in iTunes. Right-click your name and there should be an Option there that says Back-up. Kindly click the Backup option.

Backing up the iPad saves your settings, Messages, Camera Roll, documents, saved games, and other data.

Once you are done with the backup, unplug your iPad then connect your iPhone 4S. Once iTunes detect the device, right click your name on the left side, there should be an option that says Restore from Backup. Wait for the phone to restart and re-check again.

Performing the restore from backup, kindly select the backup file for your iPad, lets say the backup file for your iPad shows david 03/09/2012 then select david 03/09/2012.

Hi Chris

Where do I find the backup files you suggested I have looked all round itunes and I cant find them, where would they be on itunes or on what file on my computer?

Once you are done with the backup, unplug your iPad then connect your iPhone 4S. Once iTunes detect the device, right click your name on the left side, there should be an option that says Restore from Backup. A pop-up box will appear, you will see a drop down box there displaying all your backup files arranged recent backup first. Kindly click on the first backup file you see there.
