Let me first specify that I'm new to Macromedia DreamWeaver, Flash and Attain system and that I have registered copies of DW 1.2 with Attain object, Flash 3 with Freehand. I currently use Microsoft FrontPage 2000, and SoftQuad HotMetal 5.0. I have soon to make a big decision on which program suite I'd use to develop the next generation of a big Web site and would appreciate any information on the followings: Does DW 1.2 or 2.0 use server extensions or any server-side programs? Does DW work with ASP (Active Server Page)? How does DW integrate with databases, and how easy is it to program database-driven Web pages in DW? Marcel

You can write ASP in most any "notepad" interface and DreamWeaver is no exception. You don't need FrontPage, Visual InterDev or any other IDE to develop ASP, you just need an NT Server, IIS 3.0 or higher and Notepad.

As far as I know, DreamWeaver does not require you to install any server components, unlike FrontPage which requires the FrontPage server extentions to be running to author a web.

Database integration would all depend on what type of database you are trying to connect to. I've seen features in FrontPage 2000 that will allow you to tell FrontPage what datbase to use (MS Access for example) and you can simply create a form and with a wizard interface tell FrontPage what fields to store the values to from your form.

I hope I answered some of your questions.

Thanks Matthew,
Nice to hear that DW doesn't need any particular server installation. It is a big plus over FrontPage! Now, about databases, I know what FrontPage can do and I find the integration very well done in version 2000, the Result Wizard is very helpful for non-programmers, but I'm wondering what DW does with databases. Sites are more and more database oriented and Access is becoming a DeFacto on Win NT servers. I will have Access databases to put online very soon, how I am going to deal with it into DreamWeaver? Do I need special software? If so, what do you recommend? DreamWeaver is definitively a top choice for Web design but what about database-driven Web sites?

DrumBeat 2000 seems to be a very interesting solution for integration of Access databases and ASP with DreamWeaver. I'm going to investigate that avenue.

Yes, Drumbeat appears to be a slick application.

I have heard, however, that it uses server-side JavaScript instead of VBScript, which for most people will make editing the ASP pages it created difficult.

Hi,
I received DrumBeat 2000 ASP version. Looking in the user manual I see that the Script Center allows scripting by JavaScript or VBScript. You can use either one of the languages with the scripting tree or script by hand. I think it's good news!

By the way, DreamWeaver 3 will be available by mid-december. Free upgrade to 3 if you got version 2 after Nov. 8.

I'm going on training for DreamWeaver 2 next week and on Flash 4 in Dec. I'm planning to get DrumBeat training as soon as it will be available in my area.

I'm still questionning myself on how to use Drumbeat with DW. Is it possible to keep developping in DW and open part of a Website made with DrumBeat right in DW, and is the reverse possible (DW in DrumBeat)?
