I have an 11 year old 13 pound Shih tzu diagnosed with anemia, low red blood cell count. I read Geritol will help, but I don't know what dose to give him. I've also begun to feed him liver. Can you advise what dose I can give him. He is also currently on prednisone, but I don't think it's helping.

Hi Shari,

I am sorry to hear that your dog is anemic. A 6 mL /day dosage for Geritol is the right amount that should be given to your dog. Also,  Pet-tinic is also a good all around vitamin that has iron and B-vitamins, which your dog  needs to produce red blood cells. The Dosage needed is 1 mL (1 dropperful) per 10 lb of body weight twice a day. Palatable drops may be placed directly into your dog's mouth  mouth or poured over food.

Yes Geritol can help with Vitamin A.  I would give him half a tablespoon once a day.  You also might want to add to his food carrots, sweet potato, sweet red peppers, tuna, or melons.  Good luck on getting your pal back to full health.  I love all sorts of pets.

He's also taking Prednezone 20 mg. 1/2 tablet twice a day, and Famotidine 20 mg. 1/2 tablet once a day.  I'm concerned the Famotidine may prevent his system from absorbing vitamin B in the Geritol.  Your thoughts??  He's getting weaker every day.

It will not prevent but may decrease the absorption That is why you need  continue serving foods with a lot of iron and B vitamins like liver  +   supplement (Geritol)  that will help your dog boost the number of his /her red blood cells.

I’m agreeing with veterinarian Byron and Michael’s advice and instruction, but I have a doubt why are you giving prednisone and famotidine. You didn’t mentioned special reason for that you. Who advised you to give those medication and under what disease condition. You can asked for your veterinarian to give injection of nandrolone decanoate to improve the anemia condition, but it has to be veterinarian decision.  You can give amino-plus (amino acid) supplement, it is helpful for developing red cells.
