Hi, shouldn't do really. Does it cut out while your driving?

No, only when sitting and idling.  It's never happend while driving.

my mechanic came up with the BCM, but didn't sound right to me.  The only code on the computer was something about the coolant temp being too high, even though the temperature guage never moved.  It's happened twice now, only when sitting and idling for 30 minutes or so.  Once it stalls, it has to sit and cool for several hours before it will start and stay running again.

Hi Lyle

How are you doing? It may cause it to stall if it's grounded or faulty but it's best to have  the car scanned for fault codes to know if there are any faulty engine sensors. The BCM is not that hard to install. It's just located underneath the dash on the driver's side and it needs to be reprogrammed by the dealer after installation. Hope this helps. Is there anything else I can add or help you with? I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

the only code was the high coolant temp when they scanned it.  I was told over $400 to replace the BCM, but there's no guarantee that it will fix the issue.  As long as I don't let the car sit and idle for long, it runs perfectly.

Hello Lyle

Don't replace the BCM just yet. First of, I am suspecting that the gauge cluster is faulty and it's not giving accurate temp reading. The gauge cluster must be replaced to have an accurate reading. Second, please be sure that the fans are working properly. Try to ask your mechanic to bypass the fan's circuit so that it will stay running. If it doesn't stall after 30 minutes with the fan running then the problem could be on the temperature switch.

This gives signal to the radiator fan to turn on if the engine is hot. If it's faulty it will not transmit a signal and the radiator fan will not turn and can make the engine temp go high.

where is the temperature switch located?  I can bypass the fan so it stays running, but need to know where to find the switch so I can replace it if that is the problem.

Quite hated to accurately diagnose it without actually seeing it. If it was mine I'd be looking at replacing te crankshaft sensor. Next time it cuts out, use a scanner to read the engine speed on cranking. If it displays 000 then uve found the problem. I'd also be investigating the ignition module aswell

Usually it is located on the engine block Lyle... But please refer to the picture below for reference. Not the actual picture though

Ok, thanks.  The temp sensor sounds more likely to me, and I can change it out for like $10.  If it's not the problem, I'm still only out $10.
