Hello Tom
How are you doing? May I ask the exact model of your Mazda? Do you happen to have fuel in the car? I am suspecting a failing fuel pump that's why it will crank but will not start because it has no fuel supply. I'll be standing by for your response.
Thank you
Relly
Gas is half full if I let the 2002 Mazda set for sometime like an hour it will usually start and may not have a problem for some time. t**4@gmail.com
Can you use starting fluid Tom so we can see if it will fire up when you crank it
2002 MAZDA PROTEGE 4 cyl
no, I had to leave it at the repair shop, they have had this problem before and replaced the fuel pump
This mechanic has replaced some relay and the fuel pump but I still have the problem
Ok Tom. As a first course of action please try to use starting fluid and spray it to the throttle body so we know if it will fire up. Try disconnecting the negative battery connector as well and let it sit for 5 minutes or more before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get it back to it's normal operating state.
I am suspecting a failing crankshaft position sensor as well. The crankshaft position sensor is usually placed on the crankshaft near the main pulley. It passes on information, and as with any other component of the engine, when things begin going south, it needs immediate attention. Ignoring the symptoms of a bad crankshaft position sensor will result in rapid wear and tear of the various parts of the engine and will quickly lead to engine wear-out. Fortunately, warning signs of a bad crankshaft position sensor are easy for the driver to detect. Read through the following points and keep an eye out for any one of these warning signs.
Ignition Malfunction
When the crankshaft position sensor begins to fail, the signal it transmits to the vehicle’s computer begins to weaken. If left unattended, the signal will switch off completely. This, in turn, causes the car’s spark plugs to die out, killing the engine. If you are having problems starting your car, it could indicate a bad crankshaft position sensor.
Stalling and Backfiring
Another sign of a sensor malfunction is the constant stalling and backfiring of the engine. In such a scenario, the engine is prone to cutting off from time to time, stalling as you drive for a few seconds. Unlike ignition malfunction, the car will probably start, even run for a while, only to shut down somewhere along the way. It goes the same for engine backfiring. If you keep ignoring the warning signs though, the engine may get exhausted and die out.

My Mechanic tried your suggestions and it still does not start, Tried liquid engine start, replaced crankshaft sensor replaced the fuel pump. Got any other suggestions? Thanks Tom E
Hi Tom
Looks like that everything has been replaced. Nothing I suspect more but a failing ECU (car's computer). It might not communicating to the engine sensors that's why the car fails to start. Looks like that it will require ECU replacement. I'll be standing by.
Is this computer real expensive, I'm not the car is worth it? Tom E.
The ECU will cost atleast $90 up on ebay. But it will be cheaper on the yard Tom
When are you planning to replace it?
I may just sell it since we have another car and my wife cannot drive anymore.

"The answer I received was the things that my local mechanic was done and the car still at times will not start until I let it set for sometimes an hour. I think I will donate this MAZDA to one of the charities in the Louisville Area. I will never buy another MAZDA again. The dealer just wants to charge an arm and a leg to (TRY TO FIX IT). Thanks for your trying to help."
You're most welcome Tom. You have a good heart donating this vehicle to help others. Goodluck and have a great day! Bless you!
