Hello Rickey

How are you doing? Hope you are well. This can be a mechanical or electrical failure. As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the negative battery connector of the car and let it sit for 10 minutes or more before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get it back to it's normal operation.

If the reset did not work here's what I want you to do. The throttle body can accumulate dirt over time and will require some cleaning. Below is what it looks like.

Dirty throttle body. As you can see, the butterfly is black and full of sludge.

Clean throttle body. Looks clean and free of dirt.

Please remove the air intake to gain access to the butterfly of the throttle body. Use a throttle body cleaner or carb cleaner to clean it. Wipe the dirt. Please use a screw driver to push the butterfly and spray ample amount of carb cleaner inside. Once you start the car, it may choke because of the cleaning agent. Once they all got out of the exhaust, the engine will run smooth again.

If cleaning the throttle body doesn't help, I suspect that the crankshaft sensor is about to fail.

The functional objective for the crankshaft position sensoris to determine the position and/or rotational speed (RPM) of the crank. Engine Control Units use the information transmitted by the sensor to control parameters such as ignition timing and fuel injection timing. If it's failing or bad, the engine may stall or may not start at all. I'll be standing by for your response.

The mechanic reset the vehicle, he said i have to drive the car to reset the sensors. when i drive on the highway it stalls and then returns to normal. when i take it back for him to check the sensors it says that i reset the system but i did not

Customer

i may have 3 sensor that need to be cleared initialy but when i bring it back i might have 4 sensors to clear because of the car stalling out and me resarting it

He can be right about driving around the vehicle before the reset take effect. But if it did not change a thing then there are parts that will require some attention like the throttle body cleaning and crankshaft sensor replacement. You may want to suggest the following to your mechanic.

Did he use OBD II reader to clear the fault codes?

Posted
Customer

he used some kind of reader. it was done on saturday

Posted
Customer

i drove today about 45 miles .thats not enough?

I see. here's the thing. The reader can see fault codes and these codes pertains to what part requires replacement. We can clear the codes at first and hoping that it will not act up. But if the problem persist, it means that clearing the codes is not enough. It will need some part replacements, the reader is a reference what needs to be replaced.

ok i see. so the sensors that come up on the readings need to be replaced?

Regarding the mileage where the reset takes effect. It may take 10 to a hundred miles for it to reset.

Yes Rickey you are right. The sensors that comes up must be replaced. You'll be good after the parts replacement. THat's the use of the OBD II reader

Is there anything else that I can add or help you with Rickey?

Posted
Customer

ok but why does the mech not say these sensors need to be replaced. He's telling me it is electrical and i might have to spend alot to fix it. The car is 11 years old, how much is this going to cost?

Posted

If he's saying that, please ask for a second opinion. You may want to find a different mechanic near you who can diagnose the car better. It's easy to say an electrical failure specially if it's not your forte

Posted
Customer

ok. i should i will. I should replace and clean the parts you sugested.
