I have a 17 year old cat who was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism following a routine geriatric blood test. He was only slightly over the normal parameters and was prescribed vidalta 10mg a day. Since starting that his behaviour has become completely neurotic and I'm struggling to cope with him because he is constantly asking for food. He also stated vomiting small amounts of bile overnight. I take him to the vet regularly to check his weight, heart, breathing plus blood tests for thyroid levels, as well as a full blood screen to check for any issues with his organs ( no problems other than thyroid). He also started having an upset stomach. The vet advised to give probiotics, then antibiotics along with changing to a sensitivity food. This cleared up his stomach issues. The night time bile stopped after she advised to feed a small portion before bedtime. Following a recent thyroid blood test it was found that the levels were too low so the get advised to change the vidalta to once every other day. He seemed to lose weight over the next four weeks and so I had another blood test done which showed his thyroid levels at too high again so he was put back on vidalta every day. He had lost 0.7kg over six weeks. Now he is on daily meds again he has an upset stomach again. I started introducing a more nutritious food as I didn't feel his sensitive food was nutritious enough owing to the weight loss and demanding for food. If I let him outside after dark he scavenges for food and then vomits it back up. I keep him in but he keeps scratching at the door and howling to get out. I have tried to explain all this to the vet but they don't seem to understand he is so demanding, like a constantly crying baby. I try my best for him but nothing I do helps. I live in a calm house and his food is the absolute best and he is fed regularly. I even get up through the night to feed him. What can I do? It was almost better before the medication. I have looked into alternative herbal treatments but don't want to make things worse.
