Try this,

Go to the Settings > Notifications

You will find a list  of apps, Look for the message and messenger apps

open each and make sure that all the alerts are ON on each.

Dear John, It was a pleasure helping you with your Apple issue today. Here is a summary of the resolution.
Issue identified :

No audio when recieving Message alert

Solution Implemented :

Call customer and assisted in checking all alert setting. All Are on from Notifications > Message > Do not disturbed

Found that the ipad's lock switch is switched on which may indicate Mute

Toggle the switch and tested messaging customer

Issue resolved
