I have a 2010 Audi A4 (B8) 3.0tdi Quattro Avant S-Tronic S-line special edition. The Cruise control uses the brakes to restrict the speed going downhill. I understand that on other models, it uses the auto gearbox which is a much better system as I consider using the brakes to be bad policy, causes unnecessary brake wear and is potentially dangerous. Can this be disabled or changed? My two previous Audi A4s (B7 models) also 3.0Tdi Quattro Avant S-line Tiptronics both had cruise control but did not use braking or the gearbox to control overspeed downhill so I got into the habit of down-shifting on hills. My problem is that sometimes the braking function beats me to it and is not smooth either. Following cars just see my brake lights coming on all the time on particularly on undulating roads and that annoys me as it infers I am a bad driver who cannot control my car properly when in fact it is the car doing the braking. Using a lower gear in this circumstance is uneconomical fuel wise, On my previous cars I would normally drive a couple of mph under the speed limit and allow the slight increase to happen, knowing that on the next upslope it would reduce back and only downshift when I reached a prolonged downhill stretch.

Hello Martin

How are you doing? Is this a newly aqcuired Audi or you owned it since 2010? The safety features on the transmission and braking system in this car is controlled by the computer. It is programmed for safety and we haven't done interchanging computers to bypass the auto brake function. I believe that it's just something that we have to live with. Is there anything else I can add or help you with Martin? I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

Hi Relly, I bought this car secondhand, to replace my previous A4 which developed an expensive engine/ECU problem that could not be resolved. I have had it for 7 months. My local Audi dealers main technician says it should not do this because it does not have Active Cruise Control, but I assured him that it does, as I can see the reflection of the high-level brake light coming on in the rearview mirror, as well as feel the brakes coming on. Regards Martin

Hello Martin... Good to hear back from you. Did they run a system scan on the vehicle? It may require an ECU reset to resolve the issue

Hi Relly, they did not run a system check. Is it something I should ask them to do? I have not heard of an ECU reset, It might have resolved the issue I had with my previous car.

Hello Martin... Yes indeed. The ECU do fail over time. But here's the thing, the dealer may perform a scan and reset and if it fails they don't usually offer that much option and the issue will still remain. There are auto repair shop that can do this for you but there's a possibility that you'll replace the ECU. The ECU can be reprogrammed in your car though. The way I see it, this is the only way to resolve the issue. Try AUTOZONE Martin, they have a good reputation on fixing issues like this.

I noticed that your from GB, Autozones are in U.S. but I'm pretty sure that there will be an auto repair shop out there that can do this. Is there anything else I can add or help you with Martin?
