EXACT location of the ground for a 1992 Dodge Shadow ES Convertible 3.0 MT. that runs the turn signals and the instrument illumination. Have replaced Flasher and combination switch in the column and headlight switch. The blinkers light on the cluster but no blink. Cluster will not illuminate. Gotta be a ground somewhere. Manual says Common Bus ground?

Hello Doug

How are you doing? Do you mean the blinkers will not work on the exterior but working on the cluster? I'm gonna check my files on this Doug. Please stand by. You may type your response on the blank space and click on the blue Send Response button.

Thank you

Correct. When you flip the blinker switch on the column, the dash indicator stays lit but no blink.  Both sides are that way.  FYI.  Taillights had been blowing fuse.  I replaced all sockets including the sidemarkers front and rear.  Now they stay lit.  Working as they should.  I found one ground in engine bay.  Super crappy braided ground that was just clipped on in two places.  Replaced and upgraded that. Have never had cluster illumination sice we got the rig a few weeks ago.

Thank you for that information Doug. I'm checking the possibilites at the moment. I'll be back in a few. By the way, you said you have a repair manual?

Posted
Customer

yes Factory Service manual.  One covers regular stuff and the other one is Just Wiring schematics.

Store manuals and online say there should be a ground on each front kick panel???

FYI>  I forgot I cleaned up a ground on the left rear inner fender (trunk area).  That was crappy as well.  I can't they put grounds on a painted surface.  idiots.

They should have atleast use a sandpaper to remove the paint before putting on the ground

Anyone that knows anything about electricity would know that.  I guess Mopar engineers in the 90's were sleeping during that part of class.

Im looking at my files but all grounds are black in color and other grounds have combination like BLK/ LT GRN, BLK / TAN. On the cluster harness, You may want to start checking the wires Doug. This is an old one and the wires may have been corroded as well. Do you happen to have an electronic contact cleaner? This can help in cleaning the connections of the harness.

Oh. Backup lights dont work yet either.  Working on that.  Have new switch and will install new ground for that as well.  I'm running short new grounds individually as well as tied into the existing one.  (doubleinng up on grounds).  Yes I have contact cleaner.

I tried to pull the cluster but it won't come out of the dash.  It's loose but acts like there is positively no slack in the cluster harness. Any luck on finding the location up front for the grounds?

Do you have BODY CONTROL MODULE in your repair manual Doug? Mostly it can be the culprit as well. We work on trucks and cars and the reason why the electrical fails is because of a failing BCM. I don't have the specific location for the Shadow's BCM but you may try to check on your end. Is there any yard near your place so that you can test the BCM before purchasing it.

The BCM (Body Control Module) is the electronic control unit that monitors and controls all of the systems in the car's body. Electric windows,A/C functions, electric mirrors, electric locks, security systems, lights, etc. It communicates with all the other modules via the cars vehicle bus.

That sounds vaguely familiar. I'll have to check when I get home. I'm at work right now. BCM location?  Also hate to be a pest but up front ground locations?

No worries Doug... I'm still checking on the ground locations. To tell you frankly, this is the first time I'm gonna work on a Shadow. Never had one visited our shop as well for a long time. I'll try my very best to check on the grounds but I strongly suggest that you pull that cluster first. The current continuity issue can be underlying right there.

Roger that Relly.  We'll try a long flat screwdriver and see if I can pry the cluster harnesses off.  Online says Shadows are one tough little rig but.....P-body's are notorious for crappy wiring.  I'm inclined to agree at this point.

I agree... I'll be leaving a message right here incase anything comes up. By the way, may I ask for your email address because if the file is too big I can't attach it in the chat page. Thanks Doug

Hello Doug

I just can't find the precise for the shadow. By the way, is it a Chilton's manual you're using? It's the only possible thing that can guide us but can't open it in my end. You may want to order a copy online if you wanted to. It has everything you need. Please click on the blue DODGE CHILTON link below

Hope this helps Doug. I'll be standing by for  your response.

Relly.  Oh my God no on the Chilton's.  Those manuals are junk.  I have Factory Mopar Manuals.

Thought it was worth trying. Will it indicate the location of the BCM on the Mopar Manuals? All I can suggest for now is to check the harness of the cluster. Another one is check on the black wires or any black wires with other color combination

Hey Relly.  thanks for checking up.  Still haven't gotten ot the cluster yet.  But.....i figured out how to access the cluster harness, push it BACK instead of forward then I can theoretically unhook the harness.  I spent the weekend getting the damn rear lights and blinkers working.   Turns out there are TWO blinker flashers for this unit.  One on the relay and one hidden behind the radio console.  Talk about over-engineering!!!

You're welcome and no worries Doug. That's over engineering right there putting two relays hiding behind the radio console. Good luck Doug and I'll be checking back from you from time to time. Thank you and have a great day ahead!

Relly
