Hello Tom

How are you doing? May I ask if you have a good battery? Sometimes and in some models, low battery voltage or a weak starter can trigger a Camshaft Position Sensor code.

Bat is 18mths old, fuel filter 2.5yrs old . . . Bat is strong in starting engine, which is not a problem . . .

Thank you for that information Tom. The PO343 should have been resolved after replacing the Camshaft position sensor. Is there any yard near you? I am suspecting that the ECM is failing. It may not be communicating with the sensor that's why  this issue occur.

ECM

It's usually the fault we experience in our shop when we keep on replacing parts and sensors but the same issue occur. This will cost $60 on ebay or can be cheaper in the yard.

- Discussed what's causing the issue and possible ECM replacement must be done to resolve the problem

- Agreed that it can be the ECM

Relly,

Reading the Haynes repair manual, my fears seem to be true. That is, replacing the PCM has security issues such that the car will not start untill the dealer reprograms it. Is this true? If so is there a work-around, permanent or enough to drive it across town (10mi) to the dealer? I have ordered a used one from Sacramento to be delivered on Friday sometime. --- Tom

Hello Tom

Good to hear back from you. I don't think that you will need to reprogram the ECM on this model Tom. It's the newer models that will require one.

Relly,

PCMsat on their counter all day and did not ship. So they are shipping overnight at their expense. Should have by late morning Sat.

Relly,

Well the new used PCM did not fix it. I left Pos Bat off while changing and after starting took it off again for 3+ min with the same bad results.  How much does the exhaust back pressure play into this? --- Tom

Hi Tom

Good to hear back from you. There must be something else that's causing this issue. Are you getting code P0470? If the back pressure sensor is failing the problem may evolve into a crank-no start too. But will it run when you try a battery reset?

Relly,

Late Saturday I replaced the crank sensor as it had slightly melted on the end with some plastic build up across the detector. I removed the Neg Bat to reset the PCM but no change. So, new crank sensor, cam sensor, and new/used PCM I am stopped on what next. What role would a bad catylitic converter have on this, Blocked? No restriction (no back presure)? --- Tom

Hi Tom

I don't think that a bad catalytic converter will be the issue. There must be something else causing this issue. Try cleaning up the connectors on every sensor. If you can just use an updated scanner to know if there's any sensors causing this issue.

Relly,

On Cam sensor 12v, 5v, and Gnd are good as is the engine ground. The owner has decided to scrap the car. Fustrated as this was not my better moment in auto repair over my life since building hot rods in high school.  Thanks for you help. --- Tom

P.S. I accepted your answer but selected "not fixed, yet." hope you still get paid, as you tried.
