I have a 2011 F-350 Dually w/6.7 liter diesel. It pulls large 5th wheel. Truck has 91,000 miles and I bought it new. Recently a "trailer disconnect" msg routinely appears on dash. only for a few seconds. then "trailer connected" comes on. On a recent trip of 600 miles it did this 200 times. Have checked power cord pins which are good. Brakes lights and turn signals work when disconnect message is up. Truck has a factory tow package. Have checked power cord harness at 5th wheel hitch. seem ok. where should i look next?

Hello Bill

How are you doing? Most of the time this is caused by grounding issues. The connectors may look clean and normal but if the wiring itself is at fault you'll see the notification on the dash. But this is tricky because the loose wiring may come from the truck or the trailer itself. If you have a friend with the same trailer, try hooking his trailer to your truck and see if the notification will light up. If it doesn't then the wiring on the trailer is at fault. If the new trailer does not make a change then you can start checking on your truck's wiring. Hope this helps and I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

Relly

Thanks for your quick response.  The only place with a similar trailer is the dealership. They charge $165/hr labor and have been no help, so do not wish to go back. My old truck had a Teckonsha brake controller under the dash. this one doesn't since it a factory install. How can I check for a ground on this factory system?

You're most welcome Bill. I got some electrician friends that had the same issue and found that the wiring on the trailer is loosed if not on the truck itself. I'm not inclined to give you advice on how to trace which wire is loose but what I do in this situation is that I replace the harness itself. I always tend to go to the yard to pick the harness and it always work out alright.

Is there any yard near you? It will be cheaper to get the parts in the yard Bill

I not sure I know what you mean by "yard". Are you talking RV parts house?

Just remove the negative battery connector of the truck Bill and let it sit for 5 minutes or more before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and hopefully it does the trick.
