I have a model SC-HT690 sound system. I have my TV audio OUT connected to the HT690 AUX input and have been using the system this way for years. Now, I can only get TV sound from the Lch & Rch speakers and no sound from Cch, RSch, or LSch speakers. These worked in the past. Also, I will only get ANY sound from ANY speakers if [S.SRND] is set to (off) AND [SFC] is set to FLAT (no effect added). These functions worked correctly in the past, but not now. I have not changed any hardware, but I may have inadvertently changed something in the programming setups. Could my problem be programming or do you think I have a failure in my SC-HT690 system hardware? Online chat would be nice if anyone is available, else, I'll wait for a telephone call at ***-***-**** . Thanks, Ralph Bhirdo, email: r**7@yahoo.com

Hi Ralph,

This is a 5.1 home theater system and if you gonna watch tv using that you will only hear sound in left and right speakers only unless the channel is supported by 5.1 surround sound.

To test this issue further, if you have a dvd movies there that have 5.1 surround sound or surround sound logo on it, try to play it and see if you will get sound on all speakers while playing the movie. Try to play action dvd movies and check if you hear all surround speakers functions.

I'll be standing by for your response.

Here is my response: I have used this system for many years (you should know how old it is) and I have had sound output from all 5 speakers while playing television channels, cds, tapes, and/or radio stations, etc. What I would like to relate to you is: something has changed and I do not know what it is. If it is merely a hardware failure, can you, honestly, answer that? I cannot. You are not the technician I signed up to talk to. The tech I signed up to talk to <still typing!!!> had explained his exact credentials to me and it sounded impressive. I am interested in letting you know exactly what my credentials are so we can be on the same footing for you to properly help me. Sound good?

If you might have accidentally changed some settings on the system then try to restore the system to factory defaults. In this way, we have a baseline if the problem will rely on settings or if its a hardware failure already. See procedure below.

Let me know the result.

I had already tried resetting to factory defaults. Please wait while I try again according to your instructions.

Any update Ralph. Did the factory reset worked?

Thank you for your continued support. Now, this is where I'm at: I can tell that the instructions you sent to me:

are a cut and paste from an operations manual and not what my manual has in it. I know that I tried the reset instructions from my manual and they did not work and I'm sure they did not match yours and that your instructions are from a different manual than I have (I NEVER received an "inialized" message on my screen at any time). That being said, after following your instructions, I have had success in that I can now hear sound from all 5 speakers which has not happened in a long time, but ONLY from a DVD playback and not from the TV. I obviously changed some programming and have no idea what it was or how to reverse it. It's late, I'm tired, and I will continue this tomorrow. I used to have all 5 speakers working for TV, FM stereo, and DVD/VCR viewing and now I at least have it for DVD playing. Also, I'm checking all of this out using a different system (I have 2 systems) because my entertainment center is very large, heavy, bulky, and hard to move. I will switch to my main system tomorrow and contact you or whoever is on call at the time. Thanks for all your help, but the battle is not over yet!

Ok Ralph. To look for channels that are high definition channels and see if theres any difference. Normally, local channels have 2.1 sound encryption only and that is the reason why on 2 speakers are working when watching tv.

I\ll wait for your reply tomorrow.

Ok Ralph. Try look for channels that are high definition channels and see if theres any difference. Normally, local channels have 2.1 sound encryption only and that is the reason why on 2 speakers are working when watching tv. DVD movies are encrypted to use a 5.1 surround system that is why when you play dvd movies on the unit it detects the 5.1 surround format.

I\ll wait for your reply tomorrow.

Yes, I understand that, but, the system used to work differently with all 5 speakers working, regardless of the input format or sound encryption; but, you have a valid point. My question is why did it work one way once and now it works a different way? Good question I think. Hope I can find an answer. Good night, thanks for the help. I'll be busy tomorrow, but will try to work on it. I will be continuing on this thread when able. G'nite. Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Any update on this issue? Is eveything ok now?

What I have discovered up to now is that I did not properly apply the instructions to "reset to factory defaults" per the manual (I'll give you details if you'd like). After correctly applying this procedure, I now have sound from all 5 speakers. I am very busy right now (building a light-weight aircraft) and have not returned to this project. I anticipate getting back to it soon. I will keep you posted via this thread. Thanks, Ralph Bhirdo.
