Our border collie has a bladder infection and has high anxiety because of being uncomfortable. We have a vet appointment first thing in the morning. Can I give her an acepromazine tablet to calm her down for the night?
Is she used to taking acepromazine and was it prescribed to her?
It was prescribed by our vet for anxiety due to fireworks, etc., but we have never used it before
She just won't quit scratching at the door to go out and tries to squat and pee constantly
If it is prescribed to her it should be fine for her to take it. You may want to consider doing a half dose if she has never had it before. Common side effects include decreased respiratory rate and decreased heart rate. I would keep a close eye on her for the next couple hours to make sure she is handling it well.
Ok. How long does it last?
If you notice at any point tonight that she can no longer urinate, I would take her to an emergency veterinarian right away as urinary blockages are serious emergencies.
There is only dribbling at this point
Acepromazine can last several hours in some cases
