Hello, We have a 8 yr old pit/lab mix rescue. is in good health and taken good care of. Have talked with Vet that we love and so does Shadow our dog, cant find an obvious health problem. we would take care of it immediately. and my Vet we Trust..just a new Vet listening if you dont mind..Shadow does have some issues from being abused previously. And at times we can telll when that bothers him. but as of late he will n ot sleep at nite. lay down for a few mins and jumps up like something bit him..lays down again..then jumps up. he does have arthritis..we give him nsaids per Vet and have given Trazadone and benedryl on occasion to sleep. doesnt work..we have super expensive dog beds for him to sleep. just wonders from room to room switching beds..his tail is up, he is eating drinking, urinating and pooping stool (macroscopically looks good, no blood, or abnormal look) right now he is just standing quietly and staring..every few hours will paw us, to get in bed. Then few mins jumps up...This only happens at night. Does not do this during the day..and then some nights doesn't do it at all..I do not think that he is in pain. Although at times he will pant with it..The Vet sees nothing out right that she wants to put him under to do. He is very frightened of tests and being held down. The Vet doesnt want to unless she has to. for his comfort. Any thoughts? And is this clear as mud? lol just to add again,i wonder if its a worm, but the Vet doesnt agree 100% on that..Could it be gas rolling around? he wants to go out but doesnt really pee or poop. So this is what we do all night long. I dont want to give him drugs so I can sleep. But we gotta figure this out thank you

Is he on flea control? Sometimes a flea bite can make them act like that. Also, you may want to have his anal glands checked. He will have to be held for that unfortunately, but if it is the problem it's an easy fix for a few minutes of discomfort at the vet. When the anal glands are full, they can be very irritating. I would start there with the vet first.

It could be pain as well. Your vet may recommend adding another medication such as tramadol to work alongside the NSAID.

Thank you for your response, however all of those issues have been taken care of. We keep our animal in wonderful condition, Systemic Flea and Tick, control, Heart Worm preventive, cosequinD5, gets lots of exercise, eats a Fromm Diet. Last time Anal Glands were expressed was approx 3 months ago, we know when it happens. There are reasons to wonder about pain with some Arthritis issues. However, I just dont think that he is in pain. Some of the times when he jumps up like he was bitten I wonder if its a worm movement or Gas? With the Insaids it  could cause some Hyperacidity. It bothers me that Insaids might be irritating his Enteric Gut,somewhat but dont know the S&S for an animal. However, he is drinking plenty of water.. poop is fully formed and normal color, no noticable worms, neg for Quac.. at this time.) My Vet and I are working diligently together on this but just wanted some fresh eyes..this has been gong on now for approx 2 months. With times of him sleeping through the night no problem..in the AM ,its like nothing was wrong. Except he sleeps because he has been up all  night. Suggestion: you might want to read up on Tramadol for Canines when you get a chance...there is some new questions that have come up concerning Dogs. So, NO we WILL NOT be giving tramadol. Like I said, Shadow is well taken care of, and dont want to give him drugs at night so im not bothered. Would rather find the problem if there is one.. Thank you very much any suggestions from here would be great thx, we are stumped, except for what to give him to sleep. And even that is hard he is a Pit, and he is a tuff Guy!! Sincerely, Lee Schweitzer,
