Inspiron 3847 booting problem. The DELL logo flashes briefly on the screen and then a blank screen. Powering on and off many times, the Dell logo will start to stay on longer. Then the logo will stay on normally and windows 10 will boot normally without any windows errors. I have three SSD's and the computer starts the same way. In fact, disconnecting the SSD there is no change. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios. Windows runs normally after booting, no problems. I first thought the SSD was failing, replaced, no change, Switched back to the original Dell HD, no change. This started about three weeks ago. I don't know what else to do.

Please try to take the memory out and insert the memory back in to see if this is cuasing the issue.  Many times this error will be cuased by either faulty memory or if the contacts on the memory chips are dirty

Hi There

That has been tried many times.

Did you try to clean the contacts on the ram with some alcohol and maybe a cloth?

Have you tried to reinstall windows?

Also, do you here any clicking noises coming from the original hard drive?

Posted
Customer

I reset windows on a old SSD drive without any change.

One thing that I have noticed that is strange, after it does boot into Windows, I can reset the computer many times without any problem. The Dell logo is normal. However, letting the computer sit overnight and the problem returns. Originally thought the bios battery was bad.

All my drives are SSD.

I have not swapped out the memory sticks. You seem sure that that might be the problem. Should I purchase new memory?

Posted
Charles Totherow

Not yet. Let me narrow down the problem to make sure first.

When the computers starts up, with dell computers sometimes there are beeps codes you will here.  Does this computer make any beeping sounds at the boot up screen?

Posted
Customer

No and I have not looked at the on/off light either.

This is a hardware issue for sure.  Can you look inside the computer on the motherboard and see if any of the cylinders on the board are swelling another words if any of those are bad they will swell up and look bigger than they should be?

Posted
Customer

No, everything looks ok.

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

Can you try just ssd and reinstall Windows 10 and see if this will stay running. Also, in the bios please make sure the bios is set to AHCI mode on the hard drive controller?

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

Just one ssd please?

Posted
Charles Totherow

Also what can be an issue is the power supply.  Stock power supplies in the tower may not be enough wattage to run all those hard drives and can cause boot loops like this.  Can you check on the power supply and see how many watts it puts out?

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

Most stock power supplies are only 250 watts with towers?

Posted
Customer

I can check the bios for the AHCI but since the computer is running, the problem will not show up until the computer has been off for awhile.

Posted
Charles Totherow

Can u just try one ssd and reinstall windows and see if the boot loop still there or have you tried this already?

Posted
Customer

I have tried that already with a reinstall.

I am only using one SSD at a time, sorry to mislead you.

I cannot see the wattage rating on the power supply.

The writting is extreemly small.

Overheating may cause this as well. There is a free program to check the cpu temp.  The program is called speccy.  All intel cpu's should run betwenn 40 and 60 degrees while at idle while amd cpu may be 10 degrees higher.  Please download this program and check the temps of the cpu.

Posted
Customer

I will do that.

Posted
Charles Totherow

Have you tried to go the dell website and update all the drivers?

Posted

For video card, sound, etc.

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

All you have to do is out in the service tag number and it brings your computer right up and the current drivers as well.

Posted
Customer

Would this program tell us if the memory was bad?

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

No its displays how much memory and what kind u have.  If the memory is not listed, chances are the memory is bad.

Posted
Customer

Yes I checked the drivers at Dell.

How long have you had thios tower?

Posted
Customer

Yes

That program says that I have total physical memory at 16GB, Available memory is 11GB. Is that ok?

Posted
Charles Totherow
Dell Expert

Should display more thaty that because the onboard video card uses a certain amount and should not use that much.  Try using just 8 gigs of memory.

There has to be dust on the meomry slots beuase ram sticks are the known issue for this.  Can you get a can of compressed air and blowout the machine

Posted
Charles Totherow

Or you could use just a air compressor as well.

Posted
Customer

Sure. I can do that when I power down tonight.

The computer will not act up untill it has been off awhile, like overnight.
