I reversed the battery connections on my 2000 BMW 740il. I replaced the alternator, battery and replaced three fuses. The main fuse checks out to be okay. What else may have blown?

Hi Greg,

Seems like all parts that you have mentioned are already replaced by you. In some cases, the TPS (throttle position sensor) is also affected and also the fuel pump. You can easily test the fuel pump  normally when you turn the key to on position you will hear that the fuel pump is priming. If you can hear it primes, then you dont have to worry about that. Check the TPS or replace it if necessary.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Elixir:

The vehicle does not start. The dash board lights up and then goes blank almost immediately. So no chance to hear the fuel pump priming itself. What's the best way to test the fuel pump? And where is the TPS located on the vehicle? Many thanks Elixir!

You can test the fuel pump by using a fuel pressure test gauge. You can ask a mechanic to go to your place and have him test the fuel pum using the gauge.

The throttle position sensor for the your 740il is located on the throttle body housing Right next to the engine oil dipstick.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Elixir:

Can You tell me exactly where fuse 57 is located? I checked the trunk where the main fuse is, but I have no clue as to where #57 is exactly.

Thanks Elixir!

Mine is just the panel of red wires hooked up with 2-3 bolts each. No relays and nothing like what You are showing me.

This is why I am slightly confused.

Are you looking for the fuel pump fuse?

Posted
Customer

Yes, #17 was bad, so I am assuming #57 must be too.

Alright #17 is for the fuel pump fuse. Theres no other fuse location other than thr trunk and the engine bay. Have you check the engine bay?

Posted
Customer

Yes, that's where #17 was and I replaced it. I have the engine bay compartment opened.

Hmmmm... the relay should right there at the ride side of the compartment. Have you tried removing the carpet sidings it should be underneath it.

Customer

Is there a way for me to send You a photo of what my trunk compartment looks like?

Here's the user manual of your vehicle. Go to page 181 and you will see there how to remove the trim panel to reveal the fuse box.
