Hi Larry,
Are you getting error message on your screen?
You can send me a reply by entering your message in the box at the top then hit the send response button to send.
Hi Larry,
The self check problem is usually caused by a bad DVD or bad section of the HDD. If the problem persists after ejecting the DVD disc, then you may want to look into replacing the HDD , worst case, let's hope that it's caused by a bad DVD.
Try to turn off the unit by unplugging the cord from the outlet for 2 mins. Pluf the cord back in the turn on the unit. Try to put a different DVD disc that you used before that plays in the unit then see if you still experiencing the problem.
Let me know if this helps.
I have a DMR EH69 DVD Recorder. Last Friday I finished a recording a program. When I edited the program and deleted some of the chapters the DVD recorder went Into self check and it finished OK. It appeared that none of the program was lost. I then recorded another program and when that program ended and I hit stop the DVD recorder went into self check right away and that self check conpleted OK. This is where the problem started is when all I did was hit thr record button button it went into selk right away but this time the self check did not complete. Now there is a message that says SELF CHECK did not complete and gives 2 options.
1. press OK and the Unit opens the Disk Tray to Turn To Stand by.
2. Press Power to Start.
3. The SELF CHECK did not COMPLETE.
Every time I do this the DVD Recorder is caught in a loop.
What would the answer be for the DVD Recorder to complete the SELF CHECK

If I had to replace the HDD is there a way to copy all the programs FROM one HDD to another HDD. I have more than 400 Hours on this HDD.
I tried theose options multiple times and it didn't help.
Would a local TV Plus be able to change the Hard Drive.
One more question is could TV Plus use my ExpertHelp account password,
Is there any issues about changing HDD's
You can copy the data inside the hardrive to another drive using a comouter if the harddrive is still working. If the harddrive is defective already, then theres no way for you to access it and copy the files inside.
Local tv repairman can do the backup but lets hope that your harddrive still works but i doubt it still works. You have 50percent chance that the harddrive works at this point but you can try your luck.
Your experthelp password ia your personal password unless you want them to access your experthelp account. It is your decision if you will give it to them.
let me know if you have further questions.
If I take the DVD recorder down to TV Plus would they be able to install another HDD into the DMR EH69 and can it be any HDD.
Yes they should be able to do that if they are trained. You might want to call them up first before you go to their place to save time. I suggest buy the same specs of HDD that is installed in the unit to avoid incompatibility issues.
Any more questions?
I think I might go to TV Plus today and Print this session out. I'm not going to give my password yet, only if they have questions.
It would have to be at least 320 MB drive or larger. Should the Drive be the same size or should the Drive be larger then 320. How much expense should this be for the Hard Drive and labor. Just an estimate I'm looking at.
I think I might print this session out and go down to TV Plus.
320 MB is very small for a harddrive. You might be referring to a 320 GB Harddrive. Frankly speaking, 320GB is a quite good. You can store 1000 to 1500 HD quality movies on that. If you are going to upgrade to a higher capacity harddrive, make sure it is compatible to the unit before buying it. TV plus can determine that if the higher capacity drive is compatible or not.
For the cost, a 320GB harddriver is about 30-35USD. For the 500GB, it is somewhere 40-45usd. Labor is around 50-60usd with 2-3 hours work job.

I do remember when I got this DVD Recorder I had to call the online store where I brought it. It was that when I hooked every thing up I couldn't see what was on the TV screen because it had been set to PAL and I had to find out how to change it to the NTSC system in order to set the DVD UP. It was simple where I had to HOLD down 2 buttons on the front of the unit until it switch to the NTSC.
So the question is there any way to force the DVD Recorder into SELF CHECK so the Self check can complete.
I ment 320 GB.
I think is all I need to know.
I don't have the problem with my DVD recorder fix. Everytime when the recorder went into self check there was a error code on the front of the unit but I never got up to see what the error code was. Could it be that when the unit went into self check the error codes was either U80 or U81.
Could it be that DVD Drive could be the problem.
you have to problems here Larry. If you are getting U81 error on the screen. It is either the harddrive or one of the capacitor on the mainboard is already buldge and needs to be replaced. A trip to the service repair is really advisable for the technician to check the unit. Here's a video related to the U81 issue.

Could I take it to Best buy and have them look at it. I'm not sure if TV Plus cand do it, because they don't copy programs from the hard drive. I'll need some help to where I can take it.
Where are you located?
Traverse City,. Michigan
Here's the top 4 repair service center in your locationwith their phone numbers. You might want to call them first before going to their place to make sure if they can cater your needs.
I'll call them tomorrow.
Alright Larry.
It look's like 231 Electrics might be best place to take my DVD Recorder. I first called that number at 7:00 am and left a message. They said that they will return my call as soon as possable, that was about 10 hours ago. I've called three times where I left a message and at least 3 other times where I left no message. Because this DVD Recorder is about 8-10 years old I don't think BEST BUY well repair it since I went ther on another occasion where if I remember don't work on electris older then 5 years.
I called 231 Electrics yesterday at about 7:00 AM. I don't know what their address is, but what I don't understand is that he said that he will return my call as soon as possible. Having to wait 24 hours is not as soon as possible.
Try to call them again and check.. the guy who you contacted might forgot to return your call.
I Called at least 10 times yesterday and left about 5 messages, I don't how many times I have to call.
have you tried Sear appliance repair center? try also Home Video Studio ***-***-**** .
The local sears store closed about a year ago. Where is the Sear's appliance repair enter.
I have a new problem with another Panasonic DVD Recorder DMR EH55. I have nearly about 180 hours left on the Hard Drive. I just recorded a program and after I hit stop and started to record the next program the record button would not work and then I would push the Fuction button on the left center of the remote and nothing happens and dose not bring up the Menu. It seams that the buttons that do work is the status button. When I bring up the sub menu and view chapters I edit the program ok but then I want to delete the chapters and I can't delete the chapters. What's causing this problem. I've tried different remotes and still the same problem. I had this recorder for only about 3 weeks.
I've tried changing the remote codes but because I cant bring up the menu I can't change the remote code.
Sears Appliance Repair: I've been wondering if they would repair the dvd recorder because dvd recorder is electric not an appliance.
Try chaing the batteries of the remote then do a reset on the device. Unplug the device from the wall outlet then press and hold the power button for 20 secs. Plug the cord back in then turn on the device then check the issue again.
Try contacting Sears first to check if they can cater DVD repair. DVD's are still considered as audio/video home appliances.
I tryied all of them and it didn't help.
it seams I can't pull the menu down and I cant delete any videos. I seams that for some reason I can't edit or erace any program. As fas as I can see this is the problem. Could it be that the DVD Recorder over heated and this is why I'm having this problem.
Can you still go to the menu of the device? Is yes, then go to settings and look for 'RESTORE DEFAULT SETTINGS' or similar heading, or you can (while unit is on) on the front of the unit (not the remote) press CH UP and CH DOWN buttons together for 5 seconds - the unit will switch to standby.
I can't pull down the menu. Nothing happens when I press Functions on the right center of the remote.
Are you using the original remote?
I unplugged the DVD Recorder and went to bed last. When I got up this morning and plugged the DVD recorder back in and checked out all the functions and they all check out fine. The problem might be that the DVD Recorder over heated.
Thats one issue also. But that should not happen in a regular basis. If you find yourself getting same problem frequently, then that might leads to hardware failure, most probably the mainboard.
That was the only time I had a problem with this DVD Recorder, but I've had it for about 3 weeks.
There's one more question that I have.
The Panasoniv DVD recorder in the orignal question, I've checking around the internet and I came across MFGrefurb.com
http://mfgrefurb.com/dmreh55.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6KrtBRDLARIsAKzvQIHcNkR9ikRN6FTW2h0_1sh6pZq0kfyZECmJ_DCzbVlQ2a3E0Fay38waAmF7EALw_wcB and I would like to see what you think. This might be the answer since I have other DVD recorders where I never got them tepaired because told that it would be too expenseive.
These are refurbished unit and usually this units are already repaired and sold to the market. If there is a store warranty that they can provide, then i can say you can go ahead and grab it.
