Having some trouble with a sticky shifter on my 2008 4runner Limited (It has 161,000 miles, very well maintained, runs like a swiss clock. All highway miles). Issue comes and goes. Now, 3 days ago I smelled burning electrical burning smell and now my truck won't lock, and some lights (map) and Dome in rear passenger don't light. When I first start up the car, the guages, (tac and fuel ) go all wacky then settle down.

I removed the center shifter area trim and did a little cleaning out , and now it's behaving shift wise, but that comes and goes. Stiff, then no problem at all.

My thoughts of possible issues? 1. Neutral Safety Switch 2. Alternator not putting out proper voltage 3. Shifter cable 4. Shifter needs a real good cleaning . Where to look about the electrical issues that have occured?

I'm taking this to a mechanic, so I want some feedback before I walk in the door from you.

This seems to be an alternator going bad.  Most of the time, then alternator will not fully go out all at once.   This is a process as the voltage and/or amperage drops, the dash lights or gauges will flicker and not work correctly.  Please go to closest auto parts store and have them test your alternator as they can check the amperage and the voltage as the truck is running without having to take it off.  This is the best way to narrow down the problem and rule out the alternator.
