Avoid building huge backlinks from new site through some service/softwares. This may result in your web page being sandboxed for a while. (I personally experienced it. My web page was on the first page for particular keyword on Google. I concentrated on getting huge backlinks for that single page and after few days, the page moved to last page - around 47th page while other page ranked naturally )

Using directory is always encouraged.

Getting backlinks from other niche blog is not considered by Search Engine for ranking. But you can use it to get traffic

Profile backlink(just registering and adding the link in Signature) are useless in most cases. While You can link in dofollow forums such as digitalpoint if you have number of post.

------> Huge number of post = Higher chances of Search Engine indexing the thread along with your signature

Yea you should stay away from building links too fast if it's a new website

Also make sure you don't stop building backlinks
Adding your website to link directory sites always helps
