I am new to ASP. I understand how to set up my website pages as an application on my pc during development (so as to be able to use glabal.asa and sessions etc), but what do I do when the site is to be uploaded to a web hosting company's servers somewhere? How do I ensure that the site will be set up as an application? Do I just ask the administrators to do it or is there something that I have to do myself? Please help, someone!

The "site" doesn't need to be "set up" as an application, however, you need to check with the administrators to see if they support ASP. Not all web hosters do. Check the website of the web hosting server to see if they provide information regarding which technologies they support. If they do support ASP, simply upload the files like any other web file making sure that you have duplicated the folder structure on the web server that you used when developing the application. Good luck.
