Somehow is the engine running and what will the problem be for it to be towed?

If the MINI will be towed, I suggest that you use a tow bar instead of a tow cable. If will be great if the engine is running while being towed for better braking purposes. If the engine is not running, tow bar will be a great help for it will only take less braking effort than using a tow cable. If tow cable is the only one available, you will have to tow the vehicle very slowly and carefully to maintain a safe braking distance specially when the engine is not running. Please remember that brakes work fully when engine is running and brakes only work at least 30 - 40 percent when the engine is dead.

Based on my own experience, no damage occur when we tow it this way regardless of the engine running or not. Just maintain a safe braking distance on using tow cable and you'll be good Ron. Please let me know if I can help you any further. I will be waiting for your response and will ask you to do something when you're back.

Thank you and be safe

Thank you for the response. The Mini will be towed behind a motorhome with a tow bar setup including signal lights and brakes. The owners manual states that the vehicle can be pulled with a rope from the tow hooks but says that it should not be towed otherwise, especially the all wheel drive model.  This doesn't make sense to me.  It is a 2014 Mini Countryman All$.  I wonder what could go wrong by towing it??

That should be All4 not All$

Yes it can be towed by using the tow hook. I believe what they are saying is don't tow the vehicle without using the tow hook. Some may experiment towing it from the bumper itself which can damage the car which is an honest mistake of other people. Just as long that it's in neutral while being towed I don't see any problem with that Ron.

Since you have a towbar set up I believe you'll be good. It's better with that. I'll be waiting for your response Ron. Thanks

do you have any idea why they would state not to flat tow it?

No idea with that Ron... I know a lot of MINI owners tow flat their vehicles, even some of our customers in the shop. As long as it is in neutral you'll be good. Some people may put it in gear while in flat tow and that can really make severe damage to the vehicle. As long as it is in neutral you'll be good Ron.
