I test drove a 2009 325i E90 BMW with automatic transmission. It's done 82k miles and when I pressed kick down the engine management light went on and took a while to go off. The owner said it was 'nothing and just happens from time to time but I suspect a coding issue/ coil or injector issue. Can you provide a view and what I might need to budget for in the worst case if I buy the car please? Thanks

Hi Belal,

I suggest to have the vehicle scanned first for you to check what is causing that engine light to come on. There are several occassions that the engine light is on, it could be and coil issue, injector issue, sensors, HPFP and many more. The reason why the engine light is coming on is there is something wrong with the vehicle and that part might fail soon.

The cost of the vehicle that you will be buying might be cheap but in the long run you will end up in the car repair and spending over budget.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Elixir, thanks, the owner said he'll get it on diagnostics on monday. If he thinks he's 'fixed' it and I buy it, and there's an issue down the road in a few months, which of the potential issues you've mentioned could be the costliest? Thanks

HI Belal,

the injectors and sensors are the costiest parts not to mention the labor cost as well.

There are cases that clearing the error using the scan tool might fixed the problem.

Hope nothing major on the vehicle that you are going to buy.Good luck!

Any more questions?

Hi Elixir, which specific sensors are we talking about? What I want to do is get ballpark repair precises upfront from my garage and use these to transparently reason/ negotiate with the vendor to buy the car if he's only done diagnostics but not fixed the problem. Just give me you best guess as to the top three things I could imagine having to pay for in as much specificity as you can please, so far I have injectors and some kind of sensors, what about coils? HPFP? Thanks Belal

HPFP means High Pressure Fuel Pump. Try to check that one first before going checking the MAF sensors.
