I am replacing the rear main seal on a BMW 335i with the N54 engine. The old seal is removed, and I have two loctite compounds waiting to go on, first is a primer 171000, green liquid, instructions say to apply and allow 1 minute to dry, I let it dry for 1 hour, came back, still as wet as when I applied it, do I need to install the seal after the primer for the primer to dry? Do I need to inject loctite 193140 into the side of the seal while the primer is still wet, or should the primer be dry when applying loctite 193240 sealant? There are no good documents or procedures out there detailing these things.

Hello Matthew

How are you doing? It seems like when it says that let it dry (primer)  for a minute it will not be totally dry but it will do the job then you can apply the compound. I found out a video about the procedure that you can use as reference.

Please click on the link below

OIL SEAL

Hope this helps. I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

I also have seen this video, unfortunately this video does not help as it is made for someone reassembling and entire engine, I am just replacing the seal, the process is much different and involves the same loctite compounds in different stages being applied differently, I'm unable to use the injection valves to inject sealant as I would need to disassemble the entire engine in order to clean the ducts used to carry the sealant to the rear and front main seals. I have to apply the primer directly to the seems of the engine, I spoke with Henkel/Loctite in Germany and was told the primer should be completely dry before applying compound 193140.

Good to hear back from you Matthew. The temperature may be the reason that's keeping the curing of the primer.

Ahh this would make sense, I was working in semi-hot humid conditions when trying to apply, do you know a good temperature range?

How's the primer doing now Matthew? If it's 40 degrees Celcius it can cure in 30 minutes. But can reached it's full potential in 24 hours

It's all installed now, temperature is a bit cooler than 40°c maybe about 22-24°c, so maybe it'll take some extra time

Yes if that's the case it will take some extra time. Well it  will have an ample amount of time to cure Matthew since that motor won't be running til you finished the build. I believe you'll be good Matthew. Is there anything else I can add or help you with Matthew?

So far the seal went in without issue, I have waited 48hours and will check that the sealant has cured when I work on the car later, thank you, this is the only issue I've had so far, thank you
