Hi,

Thank you for waiting. As the first step towards the resolution, I need you to try the following:

1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the outlet.

2. Disconnect the printer from the computer and re-connect it via USB connection.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Re-plug the printer and turn it on.

Check the results and let me know what is the outcome, please.

When I followed your suggestions I got the same "Communications error...." message. But in the meantime, I discovered that if I open my systems preferences and choose "printer & scanners" I can select scan from that. It does scan with my wireless connection. I had not known about that. Before I always used the screen of the printer to select the options and it would work if the computer was hooked up to the printer with the USB cable. That is what is not working anymore. Not sure why.

Hi Steve,

Were you using Epson Scan software to scan? Also, could you please tell me what operating system do you use and what is the model of your printer?

Posted
Customer

I have no idea if it is using Epson Scan Software....I am assuming it is. I opened my System Preferences and chose Printers & Scanners, and selected Scan, and it just worked. It didn't tell me what it was using. I am using OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.2. I did update the system software today. My printer/scanner is the Epson Workforce 545.

Thank you for waiting, Steve. Could you please confirm you can print via the Printers & Scanners menu but can't by using the printer panel?

Posted

Yes, that is correct. I wasn't even aware that I could scan wirelessly. I had always used the printer screen to select the options.

Thank you. Steve, are you willing to reset the printer control panel to factory defaults? This could solve our problem, but first I need to know if you know the network key of your wireless network.

Posted
Customer

If that is the same thing as the network security key then it is rainbow2

Mario V.
Epson Tech

Yes. The key that you use to connect to your wifi. Please follow the steps below to reset the printer control panel:

1. Press the  Setup button.

2. Press the arrow buttons to select Restore Default Settings and press the OK button. You see this screen:

3. Select the following option and press the OK button:

     - Reset All Settings: Resets all control panel settings. You see a confirmation screen.

4. Select Yes and press the OK button to reset the selected settings.

Let me know once you've done with the procedure, please.

I am getting the same communication error. I am wondering if it's just the USB cable... could it have gone bad?

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

Yes, it could be that the cable is damaged. Do you have another same cable you can test with the printer?

Posted
Customer

No, I do not. But perhaps I should check that out. As long as I can scan wirelessly, I'm OK. Also, sometime during this process, another Workforce printer was added to my list of printers in the systems preferences. Can I delete that extra one?

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

For now I will research if there is anything else we could do. Sure, you can delete the extra printer by following these:

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.

  2. Select the printer in the list, then click the Remove button .

If you delete the printer that’s set as your default printer, OS X selects another printer as your default. To set a different printer as your default, choose it from the pop-up menu in Printers & Scanners preferences.

I have a new problem now. I can't print a document. It tells me the printer is not connected!

Posted

It says the printer is off-line

I also cannot scan now.... probably because of the printer being off-line. But the WiFi light is lit on the printer

Posted

Don't worry, I'm writing you the procedure to connect.

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

Sure, I believe it's because we haven't connected the printer via wifi yet. Here is the procedure:

1. Press the  Setup button.

2. Press the arrow buttons to select Network Settings and press the OK button.

3. Select Wireless LAN Setup and press the OK button. You see this screen:

4. Select Setup Wizard and press the OK button.
5. Select the name of your wireless network (SSID) or enter the name manually.
6. Enter your wireless password (or network name and then password) using the displayed keypad.

7. Confirm the displayed network settings and press the OK button to save them.

8. If you want to print a network setup report, select Yes and press the OK button. (Otherwise, select No.)

9. Press the Copy button to exit. The WiFi light should now be on, but not flashing. Note: If the WiFi light is off, you may have selected the wrong network name (SSID) or entered the password incorrectly. Repeat these steps to try again.

Hi Steve,

Yesterday we agreed we will try to uninstall the printer drivers and install them from scratch. If you're ready to do that, please follow these steps to uninstall the drivers first:

  1. Download the uninstaller here.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to create a disk image on your desktop.
  3. Open the disk image.
  4. Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation and follow the wizard.
  5. When the installation finishes, proceed to the next step.
  6. If the printer/scanner remains in the Printers & Scanners, select it and click the (remove) icon to remove it.
  7. Restart your computer

Now we need to re-install the drivers. Please follow these steps to install a printer driver:

  1. Do one of the following:

USB:

Connect your product to your Mac using a USB cable and make sure the product is turned on.

Wireless:

Make sure your product is turned on. Connect your product to your wireless network.

  1. Go to the menu on your Mac, then select System Preferences.
  2. Select Printers and Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.
  3. Do one of the following:
  • If your printer is not on the list, go to step 5.
  • If your printer is on the list, select your printer model and click the "-" (minus) button. Then go to step 5.
  1. Click the "+" button. (If you see the Add Printer or Scanner... option, select it.)
  2. In the screen that appears, select your printer model as below:

USB connection: Select the EPSON Series (USB) product.

Wireless or Ethernet connection: Select the EPSON Series (Bonjour) product.

  1. Select your EPSON Series product in the Use or Print Using drop-down list, then click the Add button.
  2. Go to the menu on your Mac, select Software Update or App Store, then click the Updates tab.
  3. Do one of the following:
  • If you see an update from Epson, select UPDATE to install it.
  • If an update is not available, you already have the latest Epson driver for your printer.

To install the scanner driver and utility, please follow these:

  1. Download this file.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to create a disk image on your desktop.
  3. Open the disk image.
  4. Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation and follow the wizard.
  5. If you're scanning over a network from Mac OS X, open the Applications folder, click Epson Software, and click EPSON Scan Settings. Make sure the Connection setting is set to Network, then click the Test button.

We can also install the Event Manager Utility. This utility allows you to activate the Epson Scan Utility from the control panel of your Epson product. Note the EPSON Scan Utility must be installed prior to using the Event Manager Utility. Here is the procedure:

  1. Download this file.
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to create a disk image on your desktop.
  3. Open the disk image.
  4. Double-click the installer icon to begin the installation and follow the wizard.

Once you're done with all the steps from above, please test if you can print. Then test if you can scan by opening the Applications folder, opening the Epson Software folder, and double-clicking the EPSON Scan icon. Click Scan. If you can scan by using the EPSON Scan program, test if you can scan by using the printer control panel. If there are any problems, let me know, please.

Thank you,

Mario

Also, I took the USB cord to a local tech shop and found it was OK. So that can be ruled out as the problem.

Thank you. Yes, uninstall all of them.

Posted
Customer

Printing functionworks; but when I try to scan I get the same error message "an error occurred while communicating with the scanner (-9923)

Posted
Customer

Should I maybe go back and run through that uninstall process again?

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

I don't think so; if you followed all the steps then you don't need to run through all of that again. Steve, when you opened the EPSON Scan Settings under Applications folder > Epson Software and clicked the Test button, did you get any error messages or has the test passed?

Posted
Customer

In the applications folder I clicked on the Epson Workforce 545 icon and not the Epson software folder. So I may have done the wrong thing there. When I opened the Epson Workforce 545 icon, it started a search for the software and downloaded it. Then I tried to print and scan. Print worked; scan gave me that error message.

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

Did you get a window like this one?

Posted
Customer

No. Never saw a place to test

Posted
Customer

That may be because I clicked on the printer icon in my applications folder and not the Epson software folder

Posted
Mario V.

Could you check if you have any Epson folder under Applications > Epson Software?

Posted
Mario V.

Or Epson Scan Settings?

Posted
Customer

When I open my applications folder, there is an "Epson Software" folder and right next to it an Epson printer icon.

Posted

OK, when I open the Epson Software folder, one of the options is Epson settings and there is a TEST when I open that

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

When you click on the Test button, do you get any messages?

Posted

First it says "Cannot communicate with scanner, make sure scanner is on, correctly set up and connected with no errors indicated". Then when I click OK, it says "The scanner is not ready; interface not connected; Option: unknown"

Posted
Mario V.

Steve, was the Network or Local radio button selected?

Posted
Customer

Posted
Mario V.

Was the USB cable connected? If it was, could you reconnect it to some other USB port on your computer?

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

And test again?

Posted
Customer

I am not connected at all to the computer. Is that the problem? I have been doing all of this wirelessly.

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

It could be, since the connection setting was set to local. Please try to connect the printer via USB and click Test again. Let me know what you get, please.

Posted
Customer

OK, when a connected the computer to the scanner/printer and use the commands on the printer screen, I get to the screen that says USB connection. When I choose that, I get the communication error message. But there is new new option under USB connection that is "SteveSchellMBP" . When I select that, it works. Then if I try to scan using the "Printers&Scanners" in my system preferences, I get the "error occurred when communicating with the scanner -9923"

Posted
Customer

Also, there are now two Epson printers in my list of printer in the systems preferences

Posted
Mario V.

Alright, thank you. When you open the Epson Scan Settings, at the top window you have a Select scanner option and 1 or 2 options to choose under drop down menu. Can you test both options/scanners via local connection? Let me know if both fails.

Posted
Customer

I have only one option at the top and when I run the test, it says "scanner is ready"

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

And you are stil unable to scan, right? Are you able to open the Applications folder, open the Epson Software folder, and double-click the EPSON Scan icon?

Posted
Customer

In the Epson Software folder in my Applications (where the settings option is), when I choose the Epson Scan icon, it does work. What does not work is when I try to scan from the "Printers&Scanners" in my Systems Preferences

Posted
Customer

And using the options on the scanner's screen will work

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

I undestand. Let's test now if it works via the printer control panel, do you agree? Please press the Scan button on the control panel, choose Scan to PC > USB Connection and then press the Start scan button to start scanning.

Posted
Customer

When I do that, I have two options. One is the USB connection. That does not work. I have now a second option that says "SteveSchellMBP" and that works fine

Posted
Mario V.
Epson Tech

Now the scanner does print but only when you select SteveSchellMBP, and not the USB connection, right?

Posted
Customer

yes

Posted

Do you think we solved the problem when the printer won't scan through the control panel? However, I am not sure why you can't print when you select Printers & Scanners in the Systems Preferences anymore. Do you think you can use the EPSON Scan program under Applications > Epson Software folder instead of that?

Posted

Yes, as long as I have something that works.

Will there be any problem having two Epson printers in my list of printers or should I delete one of them?
