kenmore ***-***-**** 4 tenant had freezer crammed with food. freezer cold but refer only cool. removed freezer food, and pulled fan cover. lots of ice in and around coils etc and fan frozen so it would not turn. thawed coil and fan area so that fan could operate normally. before I start worrying about defrost system could just having too much food in freezer blocking fan vents cause ice in and around coils and fan? also…temp control knob would not of course rotate so too much force may have damaged the controller. now rotates freely (maybe too freely) with just a hint of a detent at 12:00 and no stops at hi or low end of dial. is it toast?

Yes the freezer being packed like that could cause poor airflow circulation and cause the ice buildup and that could have caused the temp controllet to go bad if after 24 hrs the refeigerator doesnt shut off at all the that temp controller is toasted then it needs to be replaced because that is going to cause refrigerator to run continously and cause excesive build up
