I need a Chrysler technician with experience in troubleshooting/repairing the "smartbeam" automatic high beam control system. The other night I noticed that the system on my 2006 Chrysler 300C wasn't dimming the high beams for approaching traffic. Now, the high beams don't came on at all when the automatic high beam system is selected by moving the multi-function lever forward. They will go on, however, when I pull back on the multi-function lever, so it's not the headlamps. My dealer didn't have a clue so any troubleshooting tips or most likely causes that will help point them in the right direction would be helpful. Bob

Hi Bob,

Try to reset the smartbeam and see if it will fix the problem. See procedure below.

First, park up to a garage door, or storefront window (might want to NOT look directly at the reflection of the high beams if you are parked in front of a window) and make sure these conditions are met:

1) Headlamp switch is in auto mode. Set the dial in the "A" detent.

2) Make sure that automatic high beams are enabled in the EVIC.

3) Move the combination column to the forward position.

A) With the ignition in the off position, depress and hold the auto dim or on/off button on the rear view mirror. If you have a uconnect mirror, it will be the "auto" button.

B) Without letting go of the auto dim/on -off button, start the car. Once the high beams turn on, release the button. The system is now in demonstration mode, and will go through three cycles of the high beams ramping up to maximum brightness then ramping down until extinguished, while the car is stationary.

The whole process will take about 40 seconds, at which point the smartbeam system will terminate the demonstration mode, and return to normal.

Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for responding.  I followed your instructions to initialize the demonstration mode and the demonstration went fine.  It went through all the dimming stages several times.  After that when I moved the multi-function lever forward to the automatic sysytem it showed up in the display as on, but the high beams didn't come on.  Then, I found in my owner manual that the smartbeam system won't activate below 25mph.  so, I will have to wait until after dark, 9:30-10:00 EST  to try it out on the road.  That explains the second part of my complaiont, because i was trying it sitting in my driveway.  Tonight I'll try the system out on the road tonight to see if the smartbeam system engages the high beams and if iit dims them for oncoming traffic.  I'll let you know.  Bob

Any update Bob?

Were you able to test the vehicle's smartbeam?

Yes, I tried it out last night and the smartbeam system is now working correctly.  I knew about the demonstration mode, but I didn't know that using it might somehow reset the system.  How did you learn that?  Have you actually worked on troubleshooting the system or did you read about it?

Thanks for your help.  It's refreshing when someone gives advice that actualy works.
