I've been having an issue with my 04 NISSAN MURANO-- started last summer, if idling in park with the AC on -only on a hot day-above 90-...after about 10 min. the engine would sputter and stall(no CEL) if I shut the AC off before the engine stalls it would recover and not stall. STFT are high around 15 LTFT are around 5 city gas mileage went down to 8mpg highway gas mileage is the same as always around 20mpg local shops could not find any vacuum leaks MAF has been replaced- with no changes Now that the weather is cooler the car runs great unless the outside temp is 50 or above- then the same stalling and low idle happens-- once in a while tthe CEL will say CYL 2 misfire but shuts off after about 10 miles

If i were to bring you the car today- you wouldnt find anything wrong- runs great- no CEL, passed all tests

Hi Gary! Thank you for choosing ExpertHelp.com. May I know if you see any error code on your dash? Have try checking the ignition module? A failing ignition module can occasionally prevent the engine from getting spark, causing it to stall. Have this check and also if you can do a scan using a OBD2 scanner to get the correct error codes. Hope this helps.

no CEL-- would ignition module be affected by outside temps (overheating?)

Yes it will be possible. That's why I recommend you to have it check to make sure it is not faulty.

Customer

is this a common problem for the older muranos?

Posted
Customer

do you mean the coil pack?

Yes I mean the coil pack. Sorry for the confusion.

Customer

oh ok- i will check or replace--- any other ideas that it could be?

The insulation in the ignition coil will degrade over time, but many coils are designed to last 100,000 miles or more. So what I can suggest you is have it check. Big possibility this causing the issue. :)

Customer

ok - i dont know if the shop checked those-- i have 114000 miles

Coil packs DID NOT work--- so the other day , it was warmer than it has been- after starting the car,it stalled and would not restart-- I unplugged the MAF and the car started right up-- Does this automatically mean the MAF or its harness is bad?

Nissan Mechanic

Thank you for your response. Possibly. But first try to check the harness if still good. If everything in the harness pin is good after testing it then possibly there is an issue with the MAF it might need to be replace.

If i replace the MAF myself-i was told that the pcm or MAF would have to be "reset".. Is this true?

Posted

MAF and PCM can be reset using a OBD2 scanner. But even you reset it and still have the same issue it means to say the MAF needs to be replace. You can reset it first and then monitor it what will be the result.

My local garage said if I replace the MAF myself- the car still wont run right because it needs to be reset

Advise your mechanic to use a OBD2 scanner to reset the computer. And then see if that will resolve the issue or try to remove the positive connector of the batter for 10 mins and then connect it back again and see if that will works.

Customer

when you say "reset the computer" do you mean reset the "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT"?

Posted

Yes. But if the reset will not remove the check engine light then it means that it needs to replace the sensor.
