HAVE A 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER 4.0L. JUST HAD A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED...BUT THE MECHANIC THAT INSTALLED IT SPENT DAYS TRYING TO SOLVE A ROUGH IDLE. IT IDLES SO ROUGH IT SHAKES THE DASH. AND THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FILLS WITH GASOLINE FUMES AT IDLE. IT RUNS MARVELOUS WHEN IT REACHES AROUND 1800 RPMS. but FROM A STOP IT STUMBLES INITIALLY. IT HAS NEW PLUGS, WIRES, IGNITION MODULE, MAF SENSOR, AND EGR VALVE. IM HOPING TO GET GUIDANCE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AS I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO FIX THIS ISSUE MYSELF. BOB

I would check for a large vacuum leak, possibly at the intake manafold. There is a O-Ring that if not installed with :extreme care can cause what your experienceing. I use brake clean, but do not recommend this. I've got years of experience. Using carb cleaner will work fine.

Thank you for the question, and I hope this leads you in the right directionm
