I have a 2006 Kia Sportage, V6. When I crank it, it takes a while (5-6 tries) to get it running. When it does get running, there is some smoke out the exhaust which smells like fuel. Once I drive it and stop at the store, it starts right up. I am not a mechanic. It's the only vehicle I have and I need it to drive to school (I'm a High School Math Teacher). My name is Jim, and I thank you for your attention.

Hi Jim! Thank you for choosing ExpertHelp.com. First I just like to ask when this issue started? And also do you get any error code on your dash? And also with regards the smoke what color it is? And also while your engine is running kindly pop the hood and check the coolant reservoir and make sure it is in high or good level. When you're ready, please type your responses on this page and then click on the Blue Send Response button to post your response. I will be standing by for your response.

I would like to follow up if you have read my response. And also with regards to your issue please have a mechanic check your engine if there is a coolant leak because if you see a smoke while the engine is running there is a possibility that there is water leak in the engine and might need to check the cylinder gasket. And you also mentioned that the car is hard to start, advise the mechanic to check the starter and also have them check the battery if it is still in good condition.

Hope all the suggestions I provided you will help. Keep me posted and have a great day ahead of you.

Hi Ramy, I have good news!  I fixed it myself.  What happened was, when my engine was replaced, about 3 years ago, the mechanic connected the wire from the engine to the starter with a clip - yeah, go figure that one.  Anyway, it worked for all this time, and after the normal wear and tear, oil, rain, roadwash, etc.  So, I did a visual inspection and saw that there was gunk all over the clip, so I cleaned it off, reconnected it, and it works fine.  I am SO glad.  Thank you or your patience!  Jim.
