This evening, for the first time, when I shift my Mercury 40 HP EFI from neutral to put it in gear or take it out of gear and shift into neutral it makes a weird sound--almost metal on metal. What should I do?

Is it a 2 or 4 stroke Chuck?

The motor is a 40 HP EFI, 4 stroke that I believe was manufactured in 2001 or 2002.  That is based upon the year the boat was built and sold for the first time.

Once in gear the motor runs great and there are no out of the ordinary sounds coming from the motor--only hear noises when shifting.

Hello Chuck

Good to hear back from you. The noise you hear when shifting is usually caused by a worn out shifter linkage. If it's worn out it will not shift smoothly and will surely needs replacement. Below is how it looks like and will cost $90 at least.

It's good to know that it drives smoothly in gear and we can leave the gearing problem aside. Once replaced I believe you'll be good Chuck. Is there anything else I can add or help you with? I'll be standing by.

Thanks, will I hurt the engine if I continue to use it?  I live on a Harbour and it's fun to take it out this time of year for short cruises to see the Christmas decorations on the houses.
