Hi Rick,
Sorry to keep you waiting.
A stator is basically a generator on earlier model outboards, or an alternator on later models. The purpose of the stator is to supply the energy needed to operate the ignition system on an outboard boat motor. It also contains charge coils which provides a charge current for the batteries.
Symptoms of a bad stator are trouble starting the engine, rough idle, stalling at idle, missfiring, battery not charging as well.
Here's a sample video of an outboard running with bad stator.

ok foirst of all i have a 1986 mercury 150 xr2 on a ranger bassboat 375v it has been in mothballs for the past 4 years i am taking it out now and thus far have rebuilt all carbareutors and fuel pump, new spark plugs, fuel lines, 2 new power packs, and new fuel, water pump and thermostats, i started it up and it misfired a couple times then smoothed out somewhat on the idle, i let it run for a few minutes and shut it off next day I took it to lhe lake and it started great and idle out of the no wake area but as soon as I gave it the throttle to go if fell on its face and had no power and eventually diedthere was gas coming out of the top carb so i limped back to dock using trolling motar brought back home and rebuilt all the carbs I have not had it back out again and each time that i start it it rseems to get more and more worse on the start and idle,I replaced the plugs again and no difference, also it ran well and had no problems when i put it in mothballs, the idle is also too high and idles at 1200 rpm
the engine now starts and idles very roughly and dies after about 30 seconds
does the engine hesitates upons acceleration or runs uneven or surges.
it wont accellerate at all just stytters and dies
at first I thought it was a fuel problem but now I am leaning toward electrical
Here are the possible cause of the issue.
carbs newly rebuilt including floats and seats fuel pump rebuilt new fuel lines new filters it seems it is getting plenty of fueland have replaced spark plugs twice
I dont see any problem about the stator but you can test it further. You can try to plugin a voltmeter to the battery and see if you will be getting a voltage drop when the engine is running. You should atleast be getting 13v and up from the voltage meter when the engine is running. If you are getting lower that 13v then it could be the stator or the rectifier is the issue.
although it is a 1986 it has very low hours on it, so I have not checked the compression on it thus far, connect straight to the battery?
Yes. Just connect the voltage meter directly to the battery then start the engine the check the reading.
ok sir I am not currently at home with it so it would be a few hours before I get back to it and also you asked previously where my location is and I live in Arizona, north Phoenix
Thats ok. I will leave this page open for any development and will respond to you as soon as I can.
Thank you sir greatly appreciate it
You are welcome.
Good morning sir I am going to check fuel restrictions today will this run off of just a 5 gallon gas can, to see if i can isolate the problem, as to whether its the carbs or my onboard tank for restrictions on getting fuel, I did check the spark and battery I have reaalt strong spark to all cylinders and the battery is new and holding just above 14 volts and drops to just below 14 when i can get it to run for about 30 seconds before dieing, the list below appears to have alot of fuel restriction causes for my problem and i will check them out one at a time, also what is the thermal releif valve
5 gallons of gas should be enough. The thermal relief valve is the one control the idle. You may check the as well of replace it if necessary. The picture below is where the valve is normally located.
Disregard the first picture. This should how it looks like.
I am not locating that at all, is it on this outboard or located some where else?
I have 2 12 gal fuel tanks would it be on them?
there is one simular to that and its on the oil injection line below the top resevoir tank
is that the same as a poppet valve on the side of my engine ?
It should be the one below the resevoir tank.
just by putting theend of the bulb fuel line in a regular 5 ballon gas can the engine fires up the idle is down to 1000 RPM instead of 1200 and it idles longer and smoother before dieing after a minute or so
so I am assuming that my problem lies from my water separater/ fuel filter cannister back towards my 2 onboard gas tanks , plugged or restricted there somewhere would that be correct in your opinion,
You are absolutely right.
I had a deteriiated fuel line that was breaking down inside and causing restricted flow to my manuel tank switch valve, It was only about 8 inches long replaced it and blew out the crud from the valve and seems good to go for a test run now at the lake
Nice Job. Let me know if everything went well.
Yes sir definately will and thank you
I'll just wait for your next message.
Any update Rick?
Is everything ok now on your outboard?
I took it to the lake for a test run and although it did run better under koad for it to keep running I have to keep the chke button pushed in push it in momemtarily and let of f and continue to do that or iit dies, It idles fine and sounds good when not under load
Did you already cleaned the carb and performed tune up to the engine?
Yes new kits in all three carbs, impellor, spark plugs, 2 new power packs, main fuel line and bulb, new fuel lines on the engine, I have a fuel pump kit coming and hopefully be here tomorrow and if not monday for sure i ordered it the same time i ordered the carb kits but has a delay for shipping for some reason, Could the fuel pump be the problem?
I have the oldstyle fuel pump, not the square one, is there any where that has a instruction or video that shows how to rebuid a fuel pump, all thatI can find is for the new style square ones
Alright let me know what is the result of the new fuel pump. I dont have the instruction to rebuild the fuel pump. Will try to look for any information about that.
yes sir I will do
installed new fuel pump kit, took to lake for test and still no power at highert RPM's Idle is good
I am beginning to suspect that the problem might be the stator. The stator have 2 sets of windings. One is for low speed and the other is for high speed. The one that might be failing is the high speed winding.
When i push the key in to choke and hold it it will take off and go but if i release the choke it slows down and dies
Did you clean the carburetor. If it runs only when on choke then that means it is starving for fuel. Check for blockages and clean the float chamber and jet(s).
Yes all 3 carbs have new kits in them and were cleaned all new fuel lines have been installed, new spark plugs, and new kit in fuel pump but I may have got something wrong in the fuel pump when i rebuilt it so I am going to take it apart again and see if anything is out of place tomorrow
alright. Just let me know tomorrow about the result.
Have a good night!
ok have yourself a good night as well
Hi Rick,
Any update on the issue?
ok I rebuilt the fuel pump took out to the lake and was having the same problem as before, opened the fuel pump back up and checked everything and one of the new check valves was stuck , got it cleaned up and working and put back together will head to the lake today for another test
Alright. Let me know if theres the result.
Took it to the lake for a test and all is good, runs very well again with no problems, Thank you sir very much it has been a pleasure
