Dear Steven, It was a pleasure helping you with your Yamaha issue today. Here is a summary of the resolution.

Issue identified : Customer could not get sound from tv to yamaha stereo reciever

Solution Implemented : Call customer/ I walked customer through the steps of hooking up dvr to yamaha reciever via rca cables rather than hdmi cord.  This connection setup allows for sound to be heard through the tv and the reciever at the same time if customer decides not to use surround sound and just use sound from tv.  I helped customer hook up 5 disk cd changer to yamaha reciever s well and all is working.  Problem solved
