my apple id was the same as my email address : a**8@fastmail.fm.
When buying an app it took exception to this as my apple id.
I went through the steps to change it and they said they would send me an email with instructions how to verify. It has sounded several times but no email has come through. A friend told me that with her it had gone into 'junk'. fastmail has no junk.
