I have a 2003 Mits Pajero NP GLS, after putting in oil yesterday and replacing a few fuses, I started it up and the car was stuck in 3rd while resting in Drive, and the neutral light was flashing. Online forums suggest sensors, others suggest disconnecting the negative on the battery to reset the on board computer. It was running beautifully the day before. I thought I would ask an expert before doing anything. cheers

Hello Stuart

How are you doing? Yes you should start on removing the negative battery connector of the battery to reset the system and that can get it back to its normal operating state. If it fails please let me know.

I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

Relly, still flashing neutral when put in drive, and failed to mention it seems to be stuck in 3rd (limp mode??), what is odd though after removing the negative lead the compass remained on the programmed details. Is there a backup i missed or did i not have it off for long enough?

Relly are you there?

Ok, if that's the case try removing the positive connector  Stuart. Let it sit for 5minutes before reconnecting it. Let's see the result. Can you somehow drive it on limp mode Stuart?

Customer

ok I will go and remove both, but yes I can drive it in 3rd, why?

Because if removing the positive connector doesn't work I would suggest that you take it in to the nearest auto repair shop to have it scanned. This will narrow down the fault on what sensor needs replacement. Maybe one of the transmission solenoids on the valve body can be faulty as well that's why it went to limp mode.

Scan tool will be the best move after this to avoid guessing on the fix and parts to replace. I'll be standing by Stuart.

Thank you

It is resting now and i will test in a few. While waiting, how much of a job is that to replace those solenoids, and 2 why does this happen? wa driving beautifully yesterday

Customer

no luck, still blinking and compass and clock unchanged (thought that would be blank)

Ok Stuart. The transmission solenoid is located on the valve body, therefore the transmission will be torn down. Below is what it looks like, this is for the montero but it does apply the same principle.

Why does this happen? The shift solenoid will fail in any given time even without a warning specially when it's old. It's a 2003 Pajero and the solenoid may have reached it's end of service.

I suggest that you have it scanned to narrow down the search and what solenoid needs replacement. Please let me know if there's anything else I can add or help you with. I'll be standing by for your response.

Thank you

Solenoids may range from $88 to a hundred.. Plus labor cost Stuart. Yes the scantool will read all the data in the vehicle and will tell you what part is failing and needs replacement
