I suggest that you might try starting the DVD recording first. Then, press PLAY on the VHS portion, to start the tape playing.

Insert VHS tape into Vcr.

Open DVD drive, place DVD blank (of the right sort! if of the wrong sort for the drive, e.g. DVD+RW for a DVD-R-only drive, it will never get any farther than this...) in the DVD drive, then close the drive, and wait for

START.
