I replaced my water pump and temp sensor on my 2013 Audi A4 Quattro with OEM water pump and temp sensor. I noticed a crack on my temp sensor connector, so I replaced the connector. I bleed the coolant system and replace the coolant with OEM coolant (Purple in Color). I put everything back together, start my car and check engine light comes on. I get my scan tool to check for code. I get code P0118. This code is for bad temp sensor or faulty wiring. I have new temp sensor, I replaced temp connector, I test connector wiring for 5V REF. I am getting very reading on the multimeter and the scan tool is indicating -40 degrees for ECT.Why am I getting such a high reading on temp sensor connector?

Hi Alonzo! Thank you for choosing ExpertHelp.com. May I know if this is the first time you encounter this error code? When you use you scan tool did you clear the error code you are getting and then try to see if you still getting the same error code? If not try to clear the code and then run the Audi again and see if you will be getting the same error code.  When your ready, please type your responses on this page and then click on the Blue Send Response button to post your response. Hi Ramy,

I did clear check engine code.  I turned car on again and it came back on.

Posted
Customer

I have never had this code before.  This code only occurred after I replaced water pump.

I see. Can you try to remove the negative connector that is connected to your car battery for five minutes and then try to connect it again. Then try to start it again and have it run for 15 minutes and advise me if the error code will still occur. I will be standing by for the result.

I will do it now.

Check engine light cleared on the dashboard. But on the scan tool, it is showing yellow light. EGR, CAT, EVAP, HTR are blinking red.  But the check engine light is gone.  Temp sensor is -40 degree.

Can you try this. Disconnect the negative connector of the batter for 5 minutes again. After 5 minutes connect it again and then turn on and turn off the ignition 5 times but do not turn on the engine. After that start the car again and have it run for 15 minutes and advise me what will be the result.

I have no check engine light on.  The real test is when I turn the ignition on again, will the check engine light be off.  :)

I turned on the car.  Check engine light was on and stayed on.  Fan immediately came on. But, the fan has been doing this since I got the PO118 code. I drove around my neighborhood with the A/C on. I experienced no stalls, no loss of power. I switched from normal drive to sport drive, no loss of power.

Fans turned off, as soon as I turned off car.

I see. Have you check if there is an open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and PCM? If there is not then can you try to clear the check engine again and then start the car and let it run and drive it again.

I have checked ECT connector.  I replaced the ECT connector with a new connector.   I have a question for you.   ECT connector has Blue/ w White Stripes and Brown/ w White Stripes wire coming from the ECM to the ECT connector. Do you know which wire is positive?  Which wire is the negative or ground?   I have tested both connectors, but I am not getting a 5V Ref.   I am actually getting 12V, 51 V, 160 V on Blue wire.  Yes, I looked at ECM. I took apart the ECM

unit. No rust, No bent pins, No moisture.  I did not test ECM, I wasn't sure on how to do a proper test.

Not sure about what color which is the positive wire. If you replace them and just follow the same wire that is connected previously with the old one that will not be a problem. Is the engine light still on?

Posted
Customer

yes, engine light is still on.  I did follow the same sequence for connectors.
