My SQ5 2016 Audi has power steering problems. The power steering shut down and we shipped it to the dealer for repair. When it got there, 250 miles away, the steering came back and they can't find the problem. Stumped.

Hi Jean,
Most common problem with this vehicle model is the power steering module that is defective or needs to be replaced. There's even a reacall on this vehicle and what the dealership did is reinstalled/reprogram the software for the the power steering module instead of replacing the part. I would suggest to have your car thoroughly check by the dealership. You might not want to caught by a non working power steering while driving down the road.
Let me know if you have further questions.

"thank you for your answer - but this is news I already read online on another blog. My car is not included in the recall. I have already gone over that fact with the dealer where the car is. Audi USA also confirms that my car is not associated with that recall. The dealership says the car runs perfectly and that the car stats show nothing out of order. I thought you might have an original thought that we haven't covered."
The cause of the power steering lock up will only leads to two, it is either the steering column issue or the steering module is the culprit. I suggest to monitor the issue further. If problem comes back then have the power steering column checked and the module.
OK I will talk to the Service Manager at the dealer when they open this morning. They are in a different time zone so it will be at around 9 Central time. A huge problem is that the car is 250 miles away so I can't just bring it home and see how it goes.
Ok Jean. Have them inspect the 2 parts that I mentioned and if possible have them scanned the vehicle using a scan tool.
The car is a Certified Pre Owned purchase that I bought in Feb of this year. The manufacturer's waranty is up but the extended waranty goes until next September of 2020. The car has 50,000 miles on it and I have had all proper service performed. I LOVE this car.
OK I got your email on having the Service Dept inspect the 2 parts and to scan the vehicle. Thanks -
I'll be on stand by here for your next message. Have a good morning!
Thank You!
Hi Jean,
Any update on the issue? Have you contacted the Dealership?
I contacted them early this morning - just when the manager arrived - he had no news and d idn't get back to me today. I talked to him about the two steering parts that you mentioned (column or module) and the scan - he said they have been on those things. If I wasn't tied down here at the ranch with horses that are under my care until Saturday morning, I was tempted to fly over to Spokane in the morning, (Fri) and drive it home. I am obligated to stay here tomorrow though - so will call them again in the morning - not anxiouis to drive the 250 miles over desolate roads of Montana with the risk of a breakdown - but may have to go for it early next week.
The Audi USA person that has been the Waranty authority mad a strange suggestion. He said it is a long shot but, just maybe, the car has re booted its system on its own. The software might have fixed itself. Hmmmmm. Have you ever heard of this??
you can ask the Manager to check the software and see if you got the latest installed on your vehicle. Yeah, the system might have relearn or rebooted that is why it fixes its own.
It is better to check everything first especially the software before driving it home.
I will do that in the morning - and let you know what he says - thank you for helping me get through this - I appreciate it very much
Hi Jean,
Any update on the issue?
Well no update to be sure - same old thing. I made them promise that the software was the latest - they said yes. I can either leave the car there longer or, as I am going to do, just go and pick it up. Flights to Spokane look good Monday - they have a shuttle from the airport - and I will drive it home the 250 miles without incident - hopefully. Not sure what else to do -
if the software is updated and parts have been checked then i guess you are all set. Make sure you have someone with you or have your communication open incase theres a car breakdown. Good luck and drive safe.
Let me know if you have further questions.
Thank You So Much Elixir - I'm hoping for the best on the trip - I haven't been making any road trips for the last 10years! At least the roads will be good. I really appreciate your staying with me on this one - hope I can give you a review. Jeannie
