Thank you for your question. I'll do my best to assist you.

Yes, you can back it up. Just install iTunes on your computer and sync your iPhone and make sure that its done completely before updating to a newer version of iOS. Updating the software will delete the data saved in your iPhone but allows you to restore it if you are able to back them up.
